Ballaz Academy cop three trophies at Williamsburg Invitational
It was definitely a case of they came, they saw, they conquered as the Ballaz Academy invaded Williamsburg, Virginia, on Memorial Day weekend and won trophies in the three categories — Under-9, Under-11 and Under-12 — in which they were entered at the Williamsburg Invitational Football Tournament.
The Academy won 15 of the 16 games they played across the three age groups to come away victors on Sunday’s final day, representing Jamaica well on and off the field of play.
Ballaz began the competition with the U-12s, coached by former Reggae Boy Donald “Fowly” Stewart, falling to the Tidewater Sharks 2007 United 1-3 on Friday’s opening day, but rebounding on the second day, securing five wins from as any games.
The Under-9s, coached by former Reggae Girl Tashana Vincent, got the ball rolling with a comfortable 7-3 win over FC Richmond Saturday morning, before scoring a come-from-behind 6-2 win over Tidewater Sharks 2007 United in the afternoon to end their programme for the day undefeated.
The Under-11s, coached by Ballaz founder Andre Virtue, also went unbeaten in the tournament. First they demolished Severna Park 6-0 early in the morning to send a strong signal to the other teams in their group, before pounding Fredericksburg FC 10-2 late in the afternoon.
In-between the wins by the Under-9s and Under-11s on Saturday, the Under-12s brought themselves back in contention with a solid 4-1 win over Shenandoah Valley United in their lone game for the day.
With five wins under their belt on the second day and confidence sky-high in the camp, the Jamaicans launched an assault on Sunday’s final day that left most of the spectators speaking in glowing terms about their performances.
The highly impressive Under-11s kicked things off on Sunday morning with a 5-1; win over OBX Storm to advance to the final and they were quickly followed by the Under-12s who also defeated an OBX Storm team 3-1 to advance to the final in their age group.
The Under-9s, who had garnered the largest following of non-Jamaicans due their tenacity and rampant goal-scoring displays, picked off a plucky Fredericksburg FC 4-1 to make sure all three teams would be playing in a championship game.
As luck would have it, the Under-12s met their first-day conquers, Tidewater Sharks 2007 United, in the final — and this time were able turn the tables on their opponents.
An early goal from Bryan Mayhew saw them lead 1-0 at the half-time break and another midway the second half from Giovanni Binns signalled that they were in no mood to let it slip a second time around.
A penalty from the steady Kaiel Casserly put the icing on the cake as they returned the three goals to the Sharks, but this time without conceding.
The Under-11s are a team blessed with enormous talent, and while their compatriots were getting the job done on field seven, they were doing the same on field eight as both finals were played simultaneously
Like the Under-12s, it was a case of familiar foes for the Under-11s in the final, based on the structure of the competition. They came up against the same team they had beaten earlier in the morning — OBX Storm — and it was almost a case of deja vu, as they secured victory by the identical four-goal margin.
The hard-running Daniel Thomas opened the scoring before Joshua Thombs made it 2-0 at the interval. D Thomas made it 3-0 early in the second half and then the team’s leading scorer, Giovanni Taylor completed the final rout shortly before the final whistle, firing home to make it 4-0.
Fully aware of the successes of the bigger boys, the Under-9s then set about the task of making it three-from-three in championship games. They came up against FC Richmond for the second time and did the business in style, unleashing another barrage of goals to end the competition with the highest tally of all three teams,.
After a fairly nervous start, the young ones slowly got into their rhythm to blow away their opponents 6-0 with a hat-trick from Richard Clarke. The others goals came from Jude Davis, Malik Campbell and Taejhan Beecher, as they put a second pasting on the FC Richmond team.
A delighted Virtue hailed the togetherness within the camp for the overwhelming success at the tournament.
“We train together, we play together, and we win together. It was an all-around team effort that afforded us the opportunity to compete, and the results show what can happen when we all come together as one,” he said.
The contingent is scheduled to return to Jamaica today as all-conquering heroes of Williamsburg.
