Diana does it for DJ Khaled
Father of Asahd, the 11th studio album by American hip hop mogul DJ Khaled, debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 Albums chart this week. The set, which has appearances by Buju Banton, Sizzla and Mavado, also samples songs by Jamaican artistes.
Holy Mountain is a collaboration with Buju Banton, Sizzla, and Mavado. Banton is also featured on the track Holy Ground.
Holy Mountain samples One Spliff A Day, a 1981 song by (the late) Billy Boyo. The track Jealous, with singer Chris Brown and rappers Lil Wayne and Big Sean, samples Diana King’s Shy Guy, a monster hit 24 years ago.
King told the Jamaica Observer that: “ Shy Guy has been covered or sampled almost every year since it was first release in 1995, so I’m pretty much used to it by now.”
The Spanish Town-born singer shared her thoughts on Jealous.
“ Jealous has it’s own mark. The sample is not obvious and I like that. I don’t love all the songs related to Shy Guy, but if I signed off on it, I’m OK with it. I kinda look at them all as my grandkids in song form. It feels great to have them,” she said.
King, who is represented by Sony ATV Music Publishing, disclosed that permission was given for DJ Khaled to sample Shy Guy which she co-wrote with Andy Marvel.
“Usually, the artistes who are current and/or signed to a major label ask permission upfront in writing. They also send you the new song so you can actually listen and decide what percentage to use,” King explained. “This is what happened in DJ Khaled’s case. They got in touch about six months prior to the album’s release.”
In 1998, Brazilian band Fat Family covered Shy Guy as Jeito Sexy. The song was again covered 10 years later by Mya for her album, Sugar and Spice, which was released only in Japan.
In 2016, Belgian singer Unicq took her version titled Mercy (Shy Guy) to number 76 on the French Hot 100. That same year, Shy Guy was sampled in Don’t Hurt Me, recorded by DJ Mustard and Nicki Minaj.
Shy Guy was the lead single from Tougher Than Love, King’s debut album for Sony Music. It was part of the soundtrack to the hit movie, Bad Boys, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.
The song sold more than five million copies globally, and was certified gold in the United States and Germany. It also earned silver certifications in the United Kingdom and France.
Shy Guy peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 21 on the R&B Hip-Hop Songs chart, and number two in the United Kingdom. It went number one in Zimbabwe, Sweden, Spain and Finland.
Said King: “A song like Shy Guy never existed at the time. A fusion of reggae, dancehall, soul and pop. It was very unique, catchy and had an immense worldwide appeal that led to it becoming an international hit, selling over five million copies … and all this before social media.”
