Distance made the difference for Universal Boss – Halledeen
Universal Boss ( Casual Trick – Electrifying ), full brother to speedball Patriarch , came to the races on November 17, 2018 and left his connections with high expectations after his powerful 2 ¼ length win over 5 furlongs (1,000m) round in a decent time of 1:00.3.
Following his debut win, Universal Boss was expected to figure in both the Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes in December of last year and during this year’s Classic races.
Universal Boss finished fifth in the Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes and after sub-average performances since, the bay gelding’s focus was taken off the Classic races.
On Saturday, Universal Boss was stretched out to 7 ½ furlongs (1,500m) after four consecutive races at sprint distances and the Anthony Nunes trainee reignited some sparks with an impressive 8-length win in a Restricted Allowance event.
“Without a doubt, the distance played the most important role in the win today (Saturday). I have been riding this horse a lot of late and the trainer decided to stretch him out as we thought it would be best and it did work.
“All I had to do was just to steer him home. He is a very powerful horse,” Halledeen stated.
Halledeen broke Universal Boss in third position at the off behind Seadon (Samantha Fletcher) and She’s Irie (Christopher Mamdeen). Heading towards the 5- furlong point, Universal Boss cruised down into second position and by the time the field reached the half-mile (800m), Halledeen sent the bay gelding through for his second career win from 10 starts.
Dyna’s Pride (Reyan Lewis) was second and Winx Choice (Jemar Jackson) third.
The final time was 1:32.3.
