Scores of mourners from all walks of life and from across the political divide, many from as far as Westmoreland, braved last Thursday’s sweltering heat in the resort town of Montego Bay to pay respects to former Prime Minister Edward Seaga, as his body lay in state at the Montego Bay Cultural Centre.

Many, decked in shades of green and buttons bearing Seaga’s image, were in a festive mood as they discussed his legacy, while for others it was a solemn occasion.

Meanwhile, Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) councillor for the Flanker Division in St James, Senator Charles Sinclair, is proposing that May 28 of each year be declared “Edward Seaga Day” in the parish, in honour of the memory of the former prime minister.

Sinclair intends to table his proposal at today’s monthly general meeting of the St James Municipal Corporation.

The former prime minister, who died on his 89th birthday on May 28 at a Florida, USA, hospital, will be laid to rest at National Heroes’ Park on June 23, following an ecumenical service at Holy Trinity Cathedral in downtown Kingston.
