Natural Vibes won the fifth round of the Guinness Sounds of Greatness (GSOG) sound system clash at UDC Town Centre in Portmore, St Catherine last Friday.

The St James ‘sound’ defeated three rivals to claim top honours.

“Right now is pure joy, to tell you di truth. I feel happy inside. Words can’t explain,” Robert “DJ Buppy” Pinnock, a member the winning team, told the Jamaica Observer.

Those words were echoed by his colleague, Hugh “DJ Brain” Campbell.

“To know where we’re coming from as youths, things like this happen for us, it’s like a dream,” he said.

The other sound systems in round five were Little Richie, Rebel Tone and Sir Flash Mix.

Things started slowly for Natural Vibes in the opening juggling round which Little Richie won. Luck was on the side of Natural Vibes in the second section.

Crowd favourites Little Richie had an easy win over Rebel Tone, which could not meet the challenge of playing five songs by Papa San. Natural Vibes competed against Sir Flash Mix, who were also unable to meet the criteria of five Stitchie songs, setting up a face-off between Little Richie and Natural Vibes.

Little Richie looked set to take the event during the Dub Fi Dub round, but Natural Vibes brought dub plates featuring Mikey Spice and Junior Reid which swayed the audience and judges to their side.

Natural Vibes joins DJ Naz, Shadrock, Real Money and High-Grade in the June 28 final at 214 Spanish Town Road. The next GSOG is June 14 at Rudolph Elder Park in St Thomas.

“So far, we are nothing but amazed. Everybody is coming out to these events to enjoy a really great experience. It’s not only about music, but the whole culture of dancehall,” said Nathan Nelms, brand manager for Guinness.

He added that the finale will be a treat for sound system fans.

“Last year we had so many people there. This year we’re expecting twice that number because we’re going to have the likes of Bounty Killer, Foota Hype, and Coppershot as our juggling sound. Something big is going to be announced for the winning sound,” said Nelms.

Vershon closed the evening with a strong performance.
