It was Johannes “Flying Dutchman” Reijnen who emerged top rider at the end of the third round of Motocross (MX) Jamaica at Temple Hall MX Park in St Andrew on Sunday. Reijnen was the only rider to lead both the classes: A and Open.

“I’m happy I managed to win both classes. Especially the A is important for me as I need to catch back on the points I lost in round one,” he told the Jamaica Observer’s weekly Auto magazine.

Fondly called the Flying Dutchman, Reijnen hails from the Netherlands. He has been motocrossing in his country from 2002. He relocated to Jamaica in 2016. Known for his aggressive aerial racing style, he managed to hold off the always equally aggressive Kyle Reynolds and Freddy Galbiati to take the most points in the A class. In the Open class, his points margin kept him ahead of Galbiati and Craig Powell, Snr.

“The A is just the fast guys. The Open is a bit more challenging since the B class riders are competing in that class as well. So a good start is extra important. Also, most time you will see slower riders show up in front of you by end of the race and then it’s key to pass them without losing metres to the riders behind you,” Reijnen explained.

In the 50cc class, Craig Powell, Jr continued his lead. Rylan Sampson was top in the 65cc as Adrian Barnes was in the 85cc. B class went to James Todd while Craig McIntosh took the ATV class.

Reijnen reflected on the differences in racing at the two current MX venues, Temple Hall in St Andrew and DaCosta Farms in St Catherine.

“I really don’t change my riding style. Yes, the tracks are completely different in layout and surface. Temple Hall requires better fitness since you are constantly working on the bike. I do make changes in my suspension settings for the different tracks,” he explained.
