Four decades of Pulse
To commemorate its 40th milestone, an intimate gathering of industry personnel and other officials converged at Pulse modelling agency’s headquarters on Trafalgar Road in St Andrew on Thursday evening.
The occasion was a precursor to the agency’s fashion extravaganza, Caribbean Fashionweek (CFW), which began last night and will run over the weekend.
Kingsley Cooper, CEO of Pulse, says he is happy about the company’s achievements.
“We are really just starting, and sometimes it takes 40 years to start. But after that, you don’t need 40 years; every year after that you see a quantum leap. Look at what we are doing with Pulse Global, and bringing Africa and the Caribbean together and then taking it to Europe and North America — that’s a whole new horizon that we are now taking on. It’s ever developing, ever expanding and ever living,” he said.
Pulse is one of Jamaica’s premier modelling and entertainment agencies. Since opening its doors in 1979, it has racked up quite the image for itself. Growing from an idea to multimillion-dollar company, its primary focus was the Jamaican fashion industry. Later, it expanded to include concert productions, talent management, modelling agency and other facets such as the Peter Tosh Museum and Pulse Rooms.
In its 40th year, Cooper explains that the company has entered a new era.
“We are planning to take over the globe. We don’t need to be doing anymore than what we have been doing, but just taking it to wider and wider audiences. We also want to incorporate multimedia content development because there are so many outlets for content — whether old media and new media. There will also be a virtual world of Pulse,” he said.
CFW continues this evening and Sunday at the Pulse Suites at Villa Ronai, Old Stony Hill Road.
Cooper said he is expecting an excellent show.
“If you look at the line-up this year it’s not a lot of designers, it’s some hand- picked designers — so you can expect fabulousness,” he said.
Among the African designers confirmed are Agatha Moreno, Mai Taifo, Ilare, and Lanre da Silva. Regional standard-bearers including Claudia Pegus, Robert Young of The Cloth, Meiling, and Heather Jones are also billed for the event.
