Jamaica face El Salvador in Gold Cup, while Peru take on Brazil in Copa America
THE 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup and Copa America tournaments have started off with a bang, and some eye-catching performances so far. Argentina were humbled 2-0 by Radamel Falcao’s Colombia while Bundesliga star Leon Bailey led Jamaica to a nervy 3-2 win over Honduras in an historic game in Kingston.
EVENT # 1 – GOLD CUP EL SALVADOR VS JAMAICA
For the third straight Gold Cup, El Salvador and Jamaica square off, with the winner of the game tomorrow night, at the BBVA Stadium in Houston, topping the group and booking a spot in the quarter-finals.
In the first-ever Gold Cup game played in the Caribbean, El Salvador defeated Curacao, 1-0, Monday at the National Stadium in Kingston.
The Salvadorans are sure to be brimming with confidence ahead of this vital game against the Jamaicans, as back in March, in the Nations League qualifiers, El Salvador beat them 2-0 on the back of a Damion Lowe’s own goal.
Meanwhile, all eyes were on Leon Bailey for his much-anticipated Jamaican debut, but it was the veteran Dever Orgill who stole the spotlight.
The 29-year-old striker struck a quick-fire first-half double to lead the Reggae Boyz to a 3-2 win over Honduras last Monday at the National Stadium.
Head to head, the Reggae Boyz have won three of their last four meetings against El Salvador, but the Salvadorans beat them 0-2 in the Concacaf Nations League qualifying in March.
Bailey had a good game on debut for Jamaica, where he allowed the game to come to him rather than try to do too much.
Bailey is sure to be highly motivated to put on a show and lead the Reggae Boyz into the quarter-finals to show the fans why their was so much fuss for him to don the colours of Jamaica on the international stage.
The betting tip. Jamaican victory
EVENT # 2 – COPA AMERICA PERU VS BRAZIL
After dropping two points in a goalless draw Tuesday night against Venezuela in their second group game at the 2019 Copa America, Brazil are looking to clinch top position in the group with a victory over Peru tomorrow.
The Selecao’s had three goals disallowed in the draw with Venezuela, but their performance against the Salomon Rondon led Venezuelans was anything but good.
They will need to improve their game if they are to lift the trophy in their homeland, and tomorrow’s clash against Peru will not be a walk in the Park for Coutinho and company.
Meanwhile, the Peruvians proved their worth in a 3-1 win over Bolivia on Tuesday night and will make life difficult for the Brazilians to break them down in this encounter.
Peru picked up a point in a lacklustre game against Venezuela to be level on four points with Brazil, making their game a must win to top the group.
Peru have been impressive so far in this tournament, and they have shown that they can defend and attack; there’s a good balance to their team which could cause Brazil some problems. That being said, the Brazilians should up their game and win this match if they are to convince their fans they can win this tournament.
The last title for the Brazilians came way back at the 2013 Fifa Confederations Cup, and this team was already unpopular with their own fans and their 0-0 draw with Venezuela on Tuesday only made the relationship worse. Therefore, winning the Copa America on home soil is the only way to restore the fan’s trust in this team going forward.
The betting tip. Brazil victory.
