Shaquille Lowe wins boys’ U-20 long jump at Trials
S haquille Lowe won the Under-20 boys’ long jump in the morning session on yesterday’s second day of the JAAA Supreme Ventures National Junior Championships at the National Stadium with a wind-aided 7.33m (2.6m/s), having just two legal jumps, after fouling his opening effort.
Taking full advantage of the absence of his teammate Wayne Pinnock who opted to compete with the senior men, Lowe dominated the small field with his second best effort of 7.28m (4.2m/s) which would still be good enough to win as Daniel Austin was second with 6.85m (3.2m/s) and Tevin Thompson of Excelsior was third with 6.72m (6.6m/.s).
Lotavia Brown of Edwin Allen won the Under-20 girls’ long jump with a wind-aided 5.93m (4.4m/s), beating Rusea’s High’s Nia Robinson, who leapt 5.79m (3.7m/s) and Derrangello Ellis with 5.28m (-0.2m/s).
Paula-Ann Chambers, also of Edwin Allen, won the Under 18 girls’ long jump with a wind-aided 5.82m (6.9m/s), ahead of Hydel High’s Sashanti Hinds-5.52m (4.8m/s) and Kay-Lagay Clarke of St Jago- 5.34m (1.1m/s).
Calabar High’s Evaldo Whitehorne won his heat of the boys’ Under-20 400m in 46.41 seconds, just ahead of Wolmer’s Boys’ Jermey Farr’s 46.70 seconds with both runners expected to compete for podium spots in today’s final.
Calabar’s Romario Northover ran a personal best 47.83 seconds for third place to take his spot in the final.
The other five qualifiers came in the first heat where gold medal favourite Antony Cox of Racers won in 46.38 seconds ahead of Holmwood Technical’s Bovel McPherson’s-47.12 seconds and Calabar’s Shevoie Reid (47.19 seconds) in third while Christiana High’s Jamoi Jackson (48.11 seconds) and Petersfield High’s Romario Taylor (48.14 seconds) both advanced on time.
Devonte Archer of Excelsior High ran 49.11 seconds to lead the qualifiers for the Under-18 boys’ 400m after winning the first heat yesterday.
DeAndre Watkin of Jamaica College ran 49.17 to win the first heat ahead of Nile McClymont of Calabar High- 49.51 seconds and Port Antonio’s Najay Mickel- 49.86 seconds.
Tarrant High’s Jeremy Bemeridge was second in the second heat in 49.99 seconds and Jahmani Smith of Port Antonio High was third in 50.79 seconds.
Due to insufficient entries the girls’ Under-18 and Under-20 400m races will go straight to finals today.
