Woman steals bag from car
A woman, who snatched another woman’s bag with her cellular phone, US$200, and $44,000 from the top of a car in downtown Kingston, has until September 5 to compensate the complainant.
Sushana Greenfield, who initially pleaded not guilty to simple larceny before accepting responsibility, will also know what penalty she will face on that day.
The court heard that the complainant was on Princess Street packing grocery items into her car when she placed her handbag on top of the car. But soon after, Greenfield came on the scene, snatched the bag and ran into a yard.
The complainant told the court on Thursday that after her bag was stolen she raised an alarm and a young woman told her that she saw a woman running by with a brown handbag and showed her the direction in which Greenfield went.
“When me go round where she saw the girl running, I saw an old lady and I told her what happened and the old lady said she saw Greenfield with a plastic bag in the yard and went and draped her up and took the bag from her and tore the plastic bag and asked her if the bag, was hers,” she told the court.
The complainant said when she checked the bag the money and the phone were missing.
Parish Judge Vaughn Smith then asked Greenfield why she denied taking the money.
“I don’t take the money,” she insisted.
“Me did deh a di van. Me, she and a woman and when mi go inna a yard wey mi fren live, mi fren say wey mi a do ya and mi say a mi hand mi come wash off,” Greenfield claimed.
“She (complainant) never see when dem a take the bag. Is a man tek it and search it out and tek out wey dem a tek out,” she added.
However, while she was giving her explanation attorney Charles Williams intervened and told the court that he would assist her and then asked for the matter to be stood down.
When the matter resumed Williams told the court that Greenfield had admitted to taking the bag and therefore will stand the cost for the valuables that went missing.
The judge as a result requested a social enquiry report and sentencing date was set for September 5. Greenfield’s bail was also extended.
