Three in a row
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Granville Primary became the first team to win three straight St James Football Association Victoria Mutual Foundation Under-13 title after a 3-0 penalty win over John Rollins Success Primary at the UDC Field in Montego Bay on Friday.
The teams had played out a 0-0 draw in regulation and extra time.
Granville Primary’s goalkeeper, Ralick Peddie, came up big in the shoot-out, saving the first two penalty kicks he faced to lead his team to a record seventh title and their first to be decided on penalties since 2013 when they beat Corinaldi Avenue Primary.
The win avenged Granville Primary’s only loss in three years after they were beaten in the semi-finals in the 2017 season by Success Primary, who went on to win their first title.
Jordan Campbell, Abraham Quest and Denroy Campbell all converted their spot kicks in the shoot-out while Peddie saved shots from Devonte Watkin and Ferondo Atkinson before Dwayne Spence hit the inside of the post with his shot, which rebounded into play.
In the consolation play-offs, Chetwood Primary beat Barracks Road Primary 2-0 to take third place with goals from Raymond Campbell in the second minute and Kaylor Palmer scoring her first of the season in the 48th minute.
The final was expected to be a slugfest between two teams that defended stubbornly all season, conceding just one goal between them.
Granville Primary, who have back-to-back perfect seasons, only conceded one goal all season in winning all their games, while Success Primary did not concede a goal in regulation all year despite drawing twice, once in the regular season and again in the quarter-finals.
