Another Bullet to lead home rivals in LASCO Food Drink Caribbean Sprint Championship
While the stayers take centre stage in the iCool Juice Drink Superstakes on Sunday, there will be much attention placed on the LASCO Food Drink Caribbean Sprint Championship which will kick-start the Superstakes weekend of racing at Caymanas Park tomorrow.
The field has attracted the top 14 sprinters in racing as they compete over six furlongs (1,2000m) for a purse of $3 million.
The clash this year will see defending champion Chace The Great up against the likes of Another Bullet, Another Vigorous, Mr Universe, Peking Cruz, God of Love, and Money Magnet.
Below is an analysis of each runner and their chances of being crowned the 2019 sprint champion.
1. CHACE THE GREAT : (6-y-o ch g – Greatness – Our Miss Ruth ) — Two-time defending Caribbean Sprint Championship winner who is surprisingly without a win all season from five starts. Chace The Great, who was scratched out in the Saint Cecelia Cup over six-and-a-half furlongs (1,300m) on September 11, was expected to grace the winners’ enclosure many times before. In the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission Trophy on August 1 over five-and-a-half furlongs, Chace The Great disappointed when he finished in fourth place as the overwhelming favourite. He was prominent throughout the race but had nothing to offer in deep stretch, a race which was won by Zephyr. Prior to that, as the firm 1-9 favourite, Chace The Great was fourth behind Exhilarate over the five-straight course in another disappointing effort. But based on his back class he should not be underestimated.
2. CAMPESINO : (9-y-o b g – Compadre – Yaella ) — Not the horse he once was but he continues to show up in his races despite going up in age. Campesino was just 2 ½ lengths behind Ras Emanuel and Sergeant Reckless in a non-restricted Overnight Allowance event over the five-straight course on September 25. He clearly has some problems but packs the class and talent and should run reasonably well here.
3. LOTTERY TICKET : (6-y-o b m – Seeking The Glory – Just A Flutter ) – Somewhat disappointing this year with 10 runs without visiting the winners’ enclosure once. Lottery Ticket was at the races on September 25 competing over the straight, only to go down by 1 ¼ lengths to Peking Cruz. With more real estate to travel here, the final rattle of Lottery Ticket should take her close. Has the potential to get up in time if the speedsters falter.
4. EXHILARATE : (4-y-o ch f – Blue Pepsi Lodge – Purejoy ) – Very consistent sort who continues to be effective in her races at various distances. Exhilarate finished third behind Uncle Frank and Zephyr in the Saint Cecelia Cup on September 11 over six-and-a-half furlongs and though she has speed, she is not expected to have a telling effect here.
5. MONEY MAGNET : (5-y-o ch m – Nuclear Wayne – Jazzy Jet ) – A very decent runner with two wins from five starts this season. She chased home She’s A Maneater and Another Bullet in the recent Gold Cup and should once again be in the thick of things throughout this race.
6. GOD OF LOVE : (3-y-o b g – Adore The Gold – Shanda D ) – Did very well in his races to reach this level. God of Love confirmed his status as a noteworthy sprinter when he won an Overnight Allowance event on August 10 over five furlongs round. Won by five lengths beating Run Thatcher Run in 59.3 seconds and is a very talented runner, who should benefit tremendously from the experience here.
7. RAS EMANUEL : (7-y-o b h – Buring Marque – Pleasant Secret ) – Consistent horse who was a fighting nose winner on last going over five furlongs straight. Has not been out of the frame in his last seven starts and should use his good form to good effect and impact the outcome of this race.
8. ANOTHER VIGOROUS : (4-y-b g – Legal Process – Miss Nickels ) – Good sort who was a winner on last at the races on August 30 over the minimum trip on the round course which was pretty much satisfying in a time of 1:00.2 minutes. He faces his toughest task to date, and although racing at this level for the first time, he is pretty much at home and is going to run well.
9. BRUCE WAYNE : (5-y-o b g – Nuclear Wayne – Xpress Card ) – Looks well held by the principals here.
10. ZEPHYR : (6-y-o ch m – Nasheet – Rushing Force ) – Continues to make her presence felt in her races at the Open Allowance level. Steps up here to compete against the top sprinters, and although bang in form, she is going to be left behind in this one.
11. PEKING CRUZ : (4-y-o ch g – Traditional – Patty Girl ) – Was an easy 1 ¼-length winner in a non-restricted Overnight Allowance event over five furlongs straight on September 25. Toyed with rivals before sprinting off to win in a time of 59.0 seconds, and although he was comfortable in victory, Peking Cruz needs to step up on his game if he is to take home the top prize here. The Richard Azan-trained gelding was only third in this race last year, finishing 2 ¾ lengths behind Chace The Great and Mr Universe and so the capability is there to have a say once more.
12. K D FLYER : (5-y-o dkb h – Silent Valor – Dixie Flyer ) – Prefers the five-furlong straight and should not have any effect here.
13. MR UNIVERSE : (5-y-o ch – horse Region of Merit – Raging Fury ) – Came off a nearly nine-month break to finish in second place behind stable companion Run Thatcher Run going five-and-a-half furlongs (1,100m). Mr Universe led for most of the way before giving way in deep stretch to the fitter Run Thatcher Run. His last race prior to that run was on December 29, 2018 in a seven-furlong (1,400m) event where he finished in sixth place behind Another Vigorous and Another Bullet. Mr Universe is much more comfortable here and with that run under his girth will have to be caught. He was 2 ½ lengths behind Chace The Great in this same race last year.
14. ANOTHER BULLET : (7-y-o b h – Nasheet – Wisely Noted ) – The one that will more than likely start the favourite here. Another Bullet has been nothing less than impressive this season with three wins and four second-placed finishes from seven starts. His wins came on January 12 in a five-and-a-half-furlong event by 1 ¼ lengths in a quick 1:04.3 minutes; again at the same distance on March 27 by a head in a slower time of 1:06.2 minutes; and the most impressive came on April 20 over six furlongs when he defeated Chace The Great, Will In Charge and She’s A Maneater in that order in the Lady Geeta Trophy in a quick 1:11.3 minutes. His last three runs have been second-placed finishes and in those runs Another Bullet had been beaten by She’s A Maneater, on July 6 over six furlongs in the None Such Sprint, on July 20 over seven-and-a-half furlongs (1,500m) in a Graded Stakes event and on August 31 over seven furlongs in the Gold Cup. With no She’s A Maneater in the line-up, Another Bullet is expected to lead home rivals here.
