Firebrand Member of Parliament Everald Warmington has hinted that his days in representational politics are limited.
Hip, hip…
Last week he told members of his Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), thousands of whom curiously continue to elect him to represent them in Gordon House, that at age 67 he was ready for a younger person to take over soon. How soon is soon? Well, hopefully it will be in time for the next general election, which I suspect will be held in 2020, though it’s not due until the following year.
This little fellow has embarrassed the people of this country in a most foul and vulgar manner over the years. He has no respect, tact, decorum, decency…nothing. He has not only insulted the people who elected him, but others, like journalists, whose duty it is to get information from people like him, so that they too can satisfy their constituents — the people who listen, read and watch.
What bothers me is how prime ministers like Bruce Golding and Andrew Holness could continue to keep him in the living room; Holness even appointing him a minister of state, though belatedly.
Never has there been a more arrogant man in the history of Jamaican politics and Parliament. And that’s why I wonder how the JLP, loaded with decent people, allow this one disgusting apple to try and spoil the whole bunch.
When I look around and see people of the calibre of Olivia “Babsy” Grange, Pearnel Charles, Arthur Williams, Audley Shaw, Leslie Campbell, Marlene Mal… oops, wrong name; Dr Horace Chang, Derrick Smith, Delroy Chuck, Ed Bartlett, Dr Norman Dunn, and many others who have toiled hard for the great party that Sir Alexander Bustamante founded on July 8, 1943, I have to wonder what’s so special about this fellow called Warmington that he can continue with his crass (notice I didn’t drop the ‘c’) behaviour and continue his mission of disrespecting people.
I will never forget that offensive middle finger invitation that he sent out to journalists a few years ago; and only something like Alzheimer’s can flush from my memory the many incidents of vulgarity that this man, pretending to be the people’s representative, has dished out and got away with.
Let us drink to Warmington’s pending departure, and hope, for all our sakes, that he doesn’t have a change of heart.
That gem of a woman, Shelly-Ann
You just know when she is going to win a race. That’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce…the greatest 100 metres woman sprinter that Jamaica has produced.
There was never any doubt in my mind that she would not have struck gold in her favourite event and the races leading up to the final only served to confirm that, based on her form and confidence.
So, not only the greatest 100 metres champion, but the most humble and respectful athlete in the history of Jamaican sport has another jewel in her crown.
Incidentally, my prediction was for Shelly’s rival, Elaine Thompson, to finish out of the medals. It had nothing to do with her ability; nor had it any relationship to information that she was going through physical challenges.
Thompson, who opted out of the championship eventually, is not a humble athlete. You can never get everyone to behave like a Shelly, but Thompson is too cocky and needs to go back to the dresser and reflect on where she is coming from…kind of like rediscovering herself, before she can move with that confidence and inner strength to always beat the opposition.
Humility comes with discipline, and once you have both working in sync, added to the existing talent, there is little that you can do to go wrong. Thompson needs someone to whisper a few words of wisdom in her ear. Maybe then, she will gradually begin to get down from her high horse.
Gay pride or gay crap?
So I see that MoBay Pride, the LGBT movement which believes that it should run this country the way that the majority of its citizens are against, has said it has initiated a lawsuit against Mayor of Montego Bay Homer Davis, a man who means this country well.
Okay. So what are these people trying to prove? Are they saying that if I run a nightclub, for example, and they apply to me to keep a gay party there; I object, because in my estimation it is inappropriate to do so; they will take me to face a magistrate? What is the objective?
What’s so special about the Montego Bay Cultural Centre that these people have to use it to host a discussion on same-sex marriage? Why not take it elsewhere? Is the venue tailor-made for that kind of trash?
The money that they will likely use (or maybe it’s free) to push this useless lawsuit could be used to educate youngsters in Montego Bay about the importance of getting married and starting families that can build this country.
The man and man; or woman and woman thing naah go wuk. Let us save our country from those who wish to mash it up with this insane philosophy and practice.
I met Mayor Davis for the first time two weeks ago in Montego Bay. My faraway positive opinion of him was confirmed at that meeting. Added to that, I learned that he is originally from Leinster, in my parish of birth, St Mary. I continue to insist that he made the right call to deny MoBay Pride the use of the building for that purpose.
Trump’s stupidity against Cuba
When President Obama opened the gate for Cuba to be shown the respect that the north Caribbean island deserves, most of us thought that we had reached a stage of civility that would be a model for the rest of the world to emulate.
But then a majority of American people went and voted for a complete jackass in the 2016 Presidential Election and, by extension, laid the foundation for trouble to always be on the horizon.
Donald Trump has placed ice on the diplomatic gains of the two countries, spearheaded by Obama. We heard last week that former Cuban President Raul Castro and his family would not be allowed to travel to the United States. What a shame!
To impose such a restriction on a former world leader at this juncture is cruel and stupid. When you look around and see how Trump deals with other world leaders whose history of human rights abuses is appalling, you have to wonder.
Cuba has done nothing but good for not only its citizens, but the people of the world whom it reaches out to — particularly in the areas of medical care and education.
It is totally unfair for Trump to continue the inhumane treatment of Cuba and its leaders, bearing in mind the hypocrisy of his Administration by its embrace of regimes that are viciously harmful and do not contribute even one per cent of what Cuba offers to the world.
The Cuban people are warm, friendly, genuine and decent. They deserve better, at least from their neighbours. This long-standing slow poisoning of the Spanish-speaking island should cease.
It’s heart-warming to know that the collective Caribbean has always backed a resolution at the United Nations for the US to end its blockade of Cuba. I’m sure that if President Obama had been there longer, that would have been a reality.
But then, this moron might have changed it all when he took office. We should never put anything past him.
