DESPITE the early rain, hundreds braved the weather to attend Fun in the Son held at the Folly Oval in Port Antonio, Portland, last Saturday. And those who came, were not disappointed. The event was sponsored by The Best Dressed Chicken.

Tommy Cowan, who first staged the concert in Ocho Rios through his Glory Music company in 2002, was pleased with turnout.

“When we held the shows in Kingston, people in the rural communities had to come to us so we made a decision to go to the people. We thought, ‘if we can attract as many as 6,000 people, we can save 200 or 300 lives’,” he said.

Another concert was held in Mandeville, Manchester, the following day.

In Portland, the occasion saw gospel singer Carlene Davis going through a medley of songs which were well received. Her set included Glory, Nothing But The Blood, One Day At A Time, and This Island Needs Jesus. She also did a rendition of Shirley Caesar’s No Charge.

Alaine stepped up the tempo with Bye, Bye and Boast In A God.

Rondell Positive and Kevin Downswell led patrons in worship-like sets.

Positive started with Conqueror, as he got the audience to participate in a sing-along. His set included Most High, Purpose and Cover. Downswell, who closed the event, sang If It’s Not You, Freedom, I Feel Like Running and Lights.

Pastor Sara Cowan-Conner delivered the word. The evening’s other acts included Youth Reaching Youth drama group, and Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s gospel winner Pastor Marc Johnson.
