US President Donald Trump on Friday (Oct 11) suffered a blow to his efforts to block oversight of his business dealings.

This is as a result of a US court backing House of Representatives’ request for his financial records including tax documents.

The 2-1 decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit moves House Democrats closer to accessing records that would shed light on Trump’s business interests and how he built his fortune.

The court rejected Trump’s bid to stop his longtime accounting firm Mazars LLP from handing over the documents. The House Oversight Committee subpoenaed Mazars LLP in April.

“Contrary to the president’s arguments, the committee possesses authority under both the House Rules and the Constitution to issue the subpoena, and Mazars must comply,” Judge David Tatel wrote.

Trump’s lawyers can appeal the decision to the U.S. Supreme Court before it goes into effect. Trump’s attorneys “are evaluating all appellate options”, Jay Sekulow, a personal lawyer for Trump, said in a statement.
