Cricket West Indies on Wednesday named Gus Logie as the interim head coach of the West Indies women’s team. The organisation said it would immediately begin the recruitment process to fill the role permanently.

The 59-year-old former West Indies Test star of the 1980s and 90s, who served as assistant coach of the side for the last two years, replaces head coach Henderson Springer who according to a CWI statement will now “provide assistance to CWI’s coaching education programs”.

Logie, a former West Indies men’s senior head coach, will take charge of preparation for India’s tour of the Caribbean which runs from November 1 to 20.

“Gus has a long history with West Indies cricket, both as a player and as a coach,” CWI’s director of cricket, Jimmy Adams, said. “He has been a part of the women’s team for the last two years and knows the players’ techniques and skill-sets. I have no doubt he will continue his hard work in preparing the team for India Women and then the T20 World Cup next year.”

Logie takes over a side which has struggled badly over the past two years and who lie one from the bottom of the eight-team ICC Championship table on 11 points. Hosts New Zealand and the four top other sides in the standings will gain automatic qualification for the 2021 50-overs ICC World Cup.

Barbadian Betty Lewis, meanwhile, has been appointed as the new women’s team manager, replacing Anne Browne-John who was named chief selector on Tuesday.
