Garrison strikes late as Tivoli edge Dunbeholden

Tivoli Gardens 1 Garrison (82nd) Dunbeholden 0

Substitute Davion Garrison struck a minute after entering the field to fire Tivoli Gardens Football Club to a 1-0 win over a wasteful Dunbeholden FC, in their Red Stripe Premier League match at Edward Seaga Sports Complex yesterday.

Garrison replaced Junior McGregor in the 81st minute and fired home from inside the box in the 82nd minute for a crucial victory.

It was Tivoli Gardens’ second win in eight games, which allowed them to climb off the bottom of the table and into ninth spot with eight points.

Dunbeholden, who missed a penalty in the 65th minute courtesy of Deanandre Thomas, as well as several goalscoring opportunities, paid the price and slipped to 10th on seven points.

They are sitting just a point above the relegation zone after losing three of their last four games, and Coach Ricardo Smith was left devastated.

“Good game for us but bad result. Faulty finishing cost us the three points here today and it has been costing us for the entire season — and if we not scoring we are going to get beaten just like this.”

Despite playing well all season, the St Catherine-based Dunbeholden have been solid at the back with the twin towers of Captain Shaquille Dwyer and Andre Dyce, but they have scored just four goals from eight games to be hovering just above the relegation zone.

“It got to be a concern. You can’t be at the bottom of the table and you not concern. But we can’t drop our heads, and we have to come back and continue working. It is obvious we are not playing badly and we should have won the game by at least four goals today — and we didn’t,” he added.

Meanwhile Tivoli Gardens, who found the going tough at home once again, dug in and secured a crucial win that will have lifted their spirits, despite playing second fiddle to Dunbeholden most of the game. Head Coach Phillip Williams was satisfied with the victory, nonetheless.

“It’s definitely a good win for us. It wasn’t one of our better games; but we have been playing well without getting three points and we didn’t play so well but we got the three points, so we will take it.

“It’s a good morale-booster for us in terms of getting us from where we are in the table right now. As you know, it is tightly bunched and we have been playing good football and today is just reward for what we have been doing over the last couple of games,” he noted.

In other games, Cavalier FC ended Molynes United’s unbeaten run with a 3-1 beating at Waterhouse Mini-Stadium, while Mount Pleasant FA whipped Waterhouse 3-1 at Drax Hall, to also halt their unbeaten start.

Waterhouse remain at the top of the 12-team standing on 19 points, the same as second-place Molynes United, while Cavalier jumped two places to fourth with 11 points, and Mount Pleasant up to two places to sixth with 10 points.

At the Bowl, home team, The University of The West Indies (UWI) and Vere United battled to a 1-1 draw. Both teams, with six points, have fallen into the relegation zone, with UWI in 11th and Vere at the bottom in 12th spot.
