Captain Dion Stovell has bemoaned the failure of his top order as Bermuda slipped to the bottom of Group A at the ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier. He hinted it might be time to step aside.

Namibia ended a two-match losing streak by beating Scotland by 24 runs on Tuesday (Oct 22) to relegate Bermuda last place.

Bermuda lost their opening three games against Papua New Guinea, Singapore and Kenya and are on the verge of elimination from Group A. They face Namibia on Wednesday (Oct 23) followed by Scotland on Thursday (Oct 24) and Netherlands on Saturday (Oct 26).

After Monday’s 45-run defeat against Kenya, 35-year-old Stovell said: “We’re losing games at the top. Our first three batsmen, including myself, aren’t applying ourselves and spending time at the wicket. It makes it hard to recover. You saw that against Papua New Guinea, and it’s probably time to look at somebody else. I have to take ownership as skipper and I haven’t had enough time at the wicket. Even for Okera [Bascome], at the moment, it is tough. For me, I feel good in the middle, I just think at times I try and play too many shots too early.”

Fourteen teams spread over two groups are bidding for six places as qualifiers at next year’s 16-team T20 World Cup in Australia. Netherlands currently top Group A, while Canada head Group B after winning their opening two matches.
