Seven Eleven gets there
After being disqualified from second place on last, Seven Eleven returned on a mission and this time made no mistake when easily taking home the Restricted Allowance Cash Pot “Sprint” Trophy over four furlongs (800m) straight.
The Joseph Thomas-trained five-year-old bay mare, who was sent off as the 4-5 favourite in the field of eight following the late scratch of Chrisanli, won by 2 ½ lengths in a time of 46.4 seconds.
The in-form apprentice Roger Hewitt held his mount off the pace as Let It Snow (Chalrick Budhai) blazed the early trail.
However, coming across the dummy rail, Hewitt started to really push his mount and Seven Eleven responded by blowing by rivals to win the native-bred offering for five-year-olds and upwards non-winners of three event.
Beltane (Reyan Lewis), who was prominent throughout the race ran second with Let It Snow in third place after an encouraging run.
Steven Todd, Jemar Jackson continue good form
The combination of trainer Steven Todd and jockey Jemar Jackson continued their good form after posting Cali Dreamer in the winners’ circle after taking home the Cash Pot “Xtra” Trophy — a maiden condition race for native-bred four-year-olds and upwards.
Dash of Class (Samantha Fletcher) was the first to show when the starting gates opened in the 5 ½-furlong (1,100m) event but after a half-a-furlong Cali Dreamer took over with Kiss of Love (Paul Francis) attached to his outside going into the half-mile (800m) turn.
Kiss of Love pointed in deep stretch but Jackson kept his mount well-balanced on the inside rails and found extra with a furlong (200m) to go, rallying for the win.
Kiss of Love held her position for second place with Stacyslady (Osive Donegal) getting third place. The final time for the event was 1:10.1.
Stedman Curtis off the mark
Veteran trainer Stedman Curtis notched his first winner for the 2019 racing season following his charge Union Four’s victory in the Cash Pot “Rake” Trophy over 5 ½ furlongs.
Ridden by Omar Walker, Union Four ( Storm Craft – Gracious Gift) rallied from way behind to beat long-time leader Okahumpka (Shamaree Muir) by a neck in a driving finish to the wire.
For a moment it looked as if Okahumpka would steal the win at the top of the lane with a good lead, but Walker and Union Four kept digging in until they got up in time.
Miss Nancy (Jordan Barrett), also came with a strong run in deep stretch to get third place in the Restricted Allowance event for native-bred five-year-olds and upwards non-winners of four. The winning time was 1:09.2.
Active stewards disqualify two winners
It doesn’t happen often but when it does there is always a lot of talking especially among racing fans as the rare occurrence of a double disqualification of winners took place on the 10-race programme.
The first disqualification came in the fifth race – the Cash Pot “Win It” Trophy, a Restricted Allowance event run over five furlongs (1,000m) on the round course.
KJ Express, ridden by Christopher Mamdeen, made one move to win ahead of Lala Diva (Prince Holder) and Harry’s Train.
The stewards later disqualified KJ Express from first place and awarded the race to Lala Diva with K J Express demoted to fifth place behind stable companion Kalahari, for what the stewards stated was interference and intimidation when negotiating the half-mile turn.
The stewards then intervened in the next race — the Cash Pot “Bonanza” Trophy — run over the five straight course. The race was won by Ictus (Reyan Lewis) defeating Cat’s Rigger (Daniel Satchell) by a neck.
Following an inquiry and a jockey’s objection from Satchell against the winner, the colours of Ictus were lowered and Cat’s Rigger promoted to first place. The interference took place inside the final furlong of the race.
