Edward Zacca served well
Dear Editor,
I am saddened by the death of former Chief Justice Sir Edward Zacca.
As one who had the privilege of serving in Jamaica’s judiciary during his time as president of the Court of Appeal and later as chief justice, I wish to say that he displayed wisdom, had vision, and provided guidance to those who wished to be guided.
He was very courteous to his colleagues on the Bench, to court staff, to attorneys-at-law, and to litigants. It was a pleasure to be in his presence and to work with him.
He listened carefully to suggestions I made for improvements to the conditions of service in the courts and to raise the level of performance of those charged with the responsibility of delivering justice. He not only listened, he acted within the limits of his own authority and made appropriate recommendations and representations to those bodies outside his control.
In my view, he served Jamaica and the wider Caribbean very well. I trust that his family will be comforted by that thought.
May his soul rest in peace.
Seymour Panton
