Poor weather conditions halt Ben Francis semifinal between STETHS and Garvey Maceo
The second semifinal match of the ISSA/Wata Ben Francis Cup schoolboy football knockout competition double-header at Juici Field on Friday was called off with five minutes left in the first half.
Garvey Maceo led St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) 1-0 after Marvin Williams had given them a first-minute lead.
Both were playing to join BB Coke in the final of the competition. BB Coke had earlier defeated Manchester 2-1 in the first semifinal.
A
combination of severe weather factors resulted in the abrupt end of the match.
Heavy rain started 15 minutes after the start. The field held up for
approximately another 20 minutes before the water started to form small puddles
all over.
The referee, however, ended the match when thunder and lightning started.
Before
that, Williams had bundled the ball over the goal line with his belly, after
STETHS’ goalkeeper Joewayne Salmon had fumbled a grounded free-kick by
Barrington Blake and the ball bubbled up for Williams.
