Kingston College (KC) today (Sat, Nov 23) copped the Champions Cup after defeating Clarendon College 1-0 in the schoolboy competition at the National Stadium.

They became the first team to win the trophy twice, in the seventh edition of the all-island knockout tournament. They first won the trophy two seasons ago. A powerhouse strike from Ronaldo Robinson in the 63rd minute was the difference. In the first half, KC disrupted the usually slick passing game of Clarendon, by quickly attacking the opponent in possession of the ball.

They also tracked their markers, which eliminated the passing channels and resulted in many turnovers from Clarendon. Clarendon, however, broke the shackles occasionally and created a few scoring chances, but it was KC that got the two best chances. Dwayne Atkinson got the first when he latched onto a through pass but his one-time effort from the right of the penalty area hit the right post and rolled across the mouth of the goal before being cleared. The second was skied over the crossbar by Rajiv Gavin from inside the six-yard box. Early in the second half, KC got a glorious opportunity when they received a penalty after a foul, but Robinson’s spot-kick was saved by goalkeeper Prince Smith.

KC, however, took the lead when Robinson made up for the miss, with a drive from the left, from about 25 yards, that went over the outstretched hands of Smith and dipped under the crossbar.
