NPTAJ condemns violence in schools after Pembroke Hall teacher-student confrontation
KINGSTON, Jamaica— The National Parent-Teacher Association of Jamaica (NPTAJ) says it is concerned about the growing incidences of violence involving parents, teachers and students.
The NPTAJ, in a statement a short while ago, said it believes this violence is a reflection of the present situation in the society and suggested that the solution can be found through the continued engagement of parents, students and teachers.
The association further condemned all acts of violence, stating that it will continue to engage parents, its student association and the Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) with the intention of reducing and eliminating violence in our institutions of learning.
NPTAJ’s statement was issued on the heels of an incident on Thursday at the Pembroke Hall High School in St Andrew, where a teacher was video recorded issuing murder threats to one of her students.
The teacher, in response to the viral video, said the student was being disruptive and she “lost it”.
Minister of responsibly for Education, Karl Samuda has described the teacher’s actions as ‘unacceptable’ and ordered that the school produces a report following its investigation into the incident.
