Trump’s impeachment — contemptible and baseless
The contemptible and baseless impeachment of US President Donald Trump has more to do with what he represents for America than with his character and conduct. As such, it is a great crime against the people.
Trump won the election on November 8, 2016 and even before he was sworn in promises were being made to impeach him. At that time he had had no time to commit the high crimes and misdemeanours for which the American Constitution provides for him to be impeached.
One person making the promises and initiating formal efforts to impeach early in 2017 was the Democratic representative of Houston, Texas, Al Green.
Maxine Waters, Democratic representative of California, also vowed to impeach and remove Trump, and on March 21, 2017 she tweeted “Get ready for impeachment” in reference to what she said was Trump’s collusion with Russia to win the election.
To realise their goal former Federal Bureau of Investigations Director Robert Mueller was appointed a special prosecutor to investigate alleged collusion between Donald Trump and Russia. His investigation began in May 2017 and ended in March 2019. It cost taxpayers US$25 million.
What did it find? Nothing. No evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign to ‘steal’ the election as was alleged. It found what many of us knew it would find — Russian interference in American affairs which had been going on since the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917.
But the rabid leftists and liberals, aided by the media, would not stop, and before the air had been cleared on the Mueller report, they came up with another fabrication: Abuse of power. This relates to a congratulatory phone call Trump had with new Ukrainian president, Voldyormyr Zelensky, in which Trump congratulated him on his victory at the polls and mentioned many matters of interest to both countries. Then Trump, according to a record of the transcript of the call — which is all those calling for Trump’s head have — not a verbatim account, said: “I would like you to do us a favour, though, because our country has been through a lot, and Ukraine knows a lot about it.”
Democrats, the media, and Trump-haters say this is the smoking gun, for it is proof of Trump abusing his office and asking a foreign power to investigate an opponent in the 2020 election, Joe Biden. It is quid pro quo.
Then Trump says, “The other thing, there’s a lot of talk about Biden’s son, that Biden stopped the prosecution. And a lot of people want to find out about that, so whatever you can do with the attorney general would be great… Biden went around bragging that he stopped the prosecution, so if you can look into it… It sounds horrible to me.”
Biden’s younger son, Hunter, who had no experience in energy matters, joined the board of a Ukrainian company called Burisma while his Father was vice-president and made substantial sums of money for doing so.
During Trump’s call to Zelensky there was no mention of any threat to investigate the Bidens or else, or money promised wouldn’t be released. There was no mention about the 2020 election. And, there was no pressure to do anything to the Bidens, except to look into the matter. This, Trump as president, was more than entitled to do in light of reports of corruption in Ukraine.
Yet this is said to be proof that Trump was using his office to have a foreign power dig up dirt on an opponent in the 2020 election, and that doing so rises to the level of high crimes and misdemeanours for which he must be removed from office. What a joke!
What all this comes down to is sheer bitterness that Hillary Clinton did not win the election which she and her supporters and liberals believed they had “in the bag” but lost to an outsider and a businessman who isn’t a part of the Washington establishment, and who doesn’t give a fig leaf about what it thinks of him.
To inflame them all he has vowed to change things; “drain the swamp”, as he calls it, in furtherance of the interests of the people of this country. And he retaliates, when attacked, unlike other Republican presidents who took the assaults from the liberal media, leftists, and the Washington establishment meekly.
You would think that Donald Trump would be distracted and be unable to accomplish what he promised to do. He isn’t! And what he has done for his country in the short time in office is more than most, if not all presidents have done in the same period of time.
Let me recite a few:
• Almost four million jobs have been created since he took office, bringing the number of Americans employed to the highest in the country’s history. Some of these jobs have been created because investors from outside returned to do business in America. US President Barack Obama said this would never happen.
• Economic growth last quarter was 4.2 per cent. Almost four million Americans are off food stamps, compared to the Obama years when 15 million Americans went on food stamps.
• The Obamacare individual mandate, which forced people to buy insurance or be penalised, has been abolished.
• And, of course, the threat of terrorism from ISIS, which mushroomed under Obama, has been virtually eliminated.
There are many more but space won’t permit their mention.
Now, for anyone to want to impeach a president who has done so much for his country in such a short time is to either not care about the welfare of his fellow countrymen, or be so rabid to impeach that it has driven him insane.
