TUCKER, St James – The management of former two-time Red Stripe Premier League champions Montego Bay United has commenced the delivery of care packages to the club’s over 30 players and staff, as part of efforts to meet their nutritional needs during the forced break in the Jamaica Football Federation Western Confederation Super League.

The league, which includes teams from four western parishes, was postponed after the 11th round of matches were played, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The first set of care packages was delivered to players on April 3, while the second set was distributed three weeks later.

“It is not how much you have, but what you share with others. MBUFC [Montego Bay United Football Club] is blessed with persons who continue to support the team and those around us,” said club President Bruce Gaynor in a release.

“Today [last week] we distributed our second set of care packages to players, staff, and persons around the team. Even though it may be small, but we continue to give. We will be giving to our football family in two weeks again as we continue to share of what we have.”

The Jamaica Observer West was told that several businessmen and corporations assisted the management of the club with items for the care packages.

Sandra Christie, the club’s administrator, told Observer West that the distribution was undertaken in keeping with the social distance protocols set out by the Government.

“We have 30 players and staff and club members came in at intervals, all observing social distancing, as we asked them to collect their packages between 1:00 pm and 3:30 pm last Friday,” said Christie.

She noted that not all the players were able to collect their packages.

“We sent boxes by couriers to our out-of-parish players who live in St Elizabeth, Westmoreland, Trelawny, and Hanover, while myself and Mr Gaynor delivered to some in St James,” said Christie.

Meanwhile, MBU’s defender, Renaldo Wellington, was singled out for mention by Gaynor for his diligence. Wellington, who was the team captain in the most recent game, a 5-1 win over Lilliput Rovers, was presented with a smart television by the management of the club.

“He played 90 minutes in every game, and has never been absent from training. He is also the latest invitee to the national senior team, the Reggae Boyz,” Gaynor noted.
