T’Jean on the mend
PRODUCER T’Jean Bennett is currently recouping at his St Andrew home after receiving a life-saving transfusion at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) in St Andrew on Tuesday.
Bennett — who is in his 30s — suffers from aplastic anaemia, an autoimmune disease which causes the body to fail to produce blood cells in sufficient numbers. He was admitted at the UHWI on Monday.
“Him say him feeling much better,” his dad, veteran producer Mickey Bennett, told the Jamaica Observer yesterday.
The older Bennett took to social media on Tuesday to appeal for blood donations. He said he was pleased at the response.
“It’s been heart-warming. It’s been really good. People have been doing it and sending us [pictures of] the receipts. Apart from my son, there are several young people who have the same problem that he has, so we appreciate it, on behalf of them… At least, there is some blood in the system for everybody,” said Bennett.
“When you can’t get blood at your national hospital, it’s a serious thing… One of the most touching things is some friends of mine, who couldn’t give blood, their children went and give. And, we understand at this time when people don’t want to leave dem house, so that, to me, it’s as moving as anything else. We give thanks fi dat,” he continued.
According to Bennett, his son is on a special medication, Soliris. However, the medication missed a connecting flight due to travel and other restrictions brought on by the impact of the novel coronavirus disease and as a result got compromised because of improper storage.
“Normally, the drugs takes, two days to come. If it wasn’t for that drug, he [T’Jean] would have to be getting blood twice a week at the hospital,” he said.
The veteran producer used the opportunity to laud the medical staff for their tireless work.
A former singer, T’Jean is known for the singles Rainbow Covenant, D ry Bones, and Get Wid It. He has production credits on several works in the revival reggae movement, including Prayer by Chronixx, and Fly Di Gate by Tarrus Riley, featuring Kabaka Pyramid and Kelissa.
