COVID-19: Here’s what you need to know today
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The number of confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) infections worldwide surpassed 3.1 million, while 227,482 people across 193 countries and territories have died. Roughly 908,500people have recovered from the virus, as some countries slowly begin to lift lockdowns in an effort to return to normalcy.
— The number of confirmed cases in Jamaica rose to 396 yesterday with 32 new cases in a 48-hour period.
— The number of coronavirus cases in South Africa surged past the 5,000 mark on Thursday after it saw the largest single-day jump to date, health ministry figures showed.
— President Donald Trump said Wednesday the federal government will not be extending its coronavirus social distancing guidelines once they expire today.
— Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Wednesday he was following with “interest and concern” the challenges facing the country’s meat industry after coronavirus outbreaks at two major packing plants.
—Britain’s official death toll of people who tested positive for coronavirus jumped to 26,097 on Wednesday, as the country began including out-of-hospital deaths for the first time.
—The Cuban Ministry of Public Health says 20 people have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the number of cases across the Spanish-speaking Caribbean island, to 1,389.
— The US has so far recorded 60,999 deaths, making it the hardest-hit country. Meanwhile, Italy has recorded 27,682 deaths, Britain 26,097, Spain 24,543 and France 24,087.
