COVID-19: Here’s what you need to know today
KINGSTON, Jamaica — More than 122 million coronavirus infections have been confirmed worldwide, with over 2.6 million people across 196 countries and territories having died and over 70 million having recovered from the virus.
Many countries have re-imposed restrictions on movement and social gatherings. Meanwhile, some countries are moving to inoculate citizens with recently developed vaccines.
— Jamaica recorded 602 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday and two additional deaths, bringing the total number of cases to 31,907 and the death toll to 494.
— Jamaica yesterday received 14,400 doses of the COVID-19 vaccines, which were procured under the COVAX Facility.
— COVID-19 vaccinations will begin today for Cabinet members, Parliamentarians and heads of ministries, departments and agencies of Government who are 60 years and older.
— Premier David Burt says more than three-quarters of the current active COVID-19 cases in Bermuda are the UK variant.
— An international expert team that visited China to investigate the origins of COVID-19 has postponed publishing their report, which will now likely appear next week, the WHO said today.
— WHO safety experts prepared to meet today to discuss the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine whose rollout has been halted in several European countries over blood clot fears, imperilling the pandemic fight as infection rates surge in several countries.
— China will give United Nations peacekeeping troops 300,000 doses of coronavirus vaccine, the Chinese diplomatic mission to the UN said Monday, bolstering the 200,000 doses already pledged by India to protect 100,000 soldiers and police officers deployed in peace missions.
— US manufacturer Moderna said it has started COVID-19 vaccine trials for children aged from six months to under 12 years old, with plans to enroll about 6,750 participants.
— The United States has so far recorded 535,661 deaths, making it the hardest-hit country. Meanwhile, Brazil has recorded 279,286 deaths, Mexico 194,944, India 158,856, and the United Kingdom 125,580.
