Mahogany set to shine in Overnight Allowance feature
Local-bred Mahogany faces foreign invaders, as Saturday, Sunday race days attract over 215 starters

Mahogany set to shine in Overnight Allowance feature

AFTER dominating last Saturday’s race meet with two winners, second-generation trainer Ian Parsard is well-poised once again to dictate proceedings on the 10-race programme as he holds the aces in three of the four highlighting events at Caymanas Park today.

Parsard saddles the talented Mahogany in the top-rated, $1-million Overnight Allowance event, in addition to Awesome Liz and Big Jule in Divisions One and Two, respectively, of the $900,000 Mr Lover Lover Trophy.

Parsard’s trio will be ridden by three different jockeys as Mahogany will have Dane Dawkins in the irons while Reyan Lewis will partner Awesome Liz and Omar Walker will be atop Big Jule.

Mahogany makes a return to competitive racing here after a 177-day break. His last run came on December 26 in the Ian Levy Cup over eight and a half furlongs (1,700m), and after leading for most of the way Mahogany finished in fourth place by eight and a quarter lengths behind Horse of the Year Nipster.

He is better suited to this distance of six furlongs (1,200m) and, given his superior speed and talent, he has an easy task of earning another win for his in form trainer against subdued opponents, especially now that he is down in class here.

In Division One of the Mr Lover Lover Trophy over nine furlongs and 25 yards (1,820m) Awesome Liz is expected to notch her first win on local soil. The American-bred bay filly was disappointing in her last run over six furlongs as the favourite, finishing in eighth place by over 21 lengths behind Secret Identity. Prior to that Awesome Liz was second behind Miniature Man over one mile on April 17 and, based on that run, is good enough to beat these here. Santorini, Moneyman, Heavenly Glitter and Daddy Jones should put in good efforts.

Big Jule should have things easier in Division Two as he faces an average bunch of runners. Big Jule was just beaten by Amy The Butcher and Rusty over seven furlongs (1,400m) on May 22. However, Big Jule continues to move sweetly at exercise in the mornings and with the blinkers off, will not be easily denied. Regal and Royal looks the only danger to the favourite here.

The other trophy race on tap is the $660,000 Roderick “Pilot” Francis Memorial, a three-year-old and upward Optional Claiming ($350,000-$300,000) event over six furlongs. The top contenders are Buckaluck, Papa Albert and Awesome Aviator.

Another trainer who should also enjoy a good day at the races is Johnny Wilmot as the in form conditioner eyes a three-timer with Nuclear Emma in the second race, Top Eagle in the fifth race and Purple Wayne in the 10th and final event.

Ones to watch:

Race 1) Make Up Artist/Versatile Vision/Attorney General

Race 2) Nuclear Emma/Bloodsweatandtears/Berry Boy

Race 3) Adoration/Commissioner/Dorthebutcher

Race 4) Papa Albert/Buckaluck/Awesome Aviator

Race 5) Top Eagle/Bigman Union/Pinders Valley

Race 6) Another Champion/Enrapture/Mine That Cat

Race 7) Mahogany/Ras Emanuel/Rum With Me

Race 8) Awesome Liz/Santorini/Sir John

Race 9) Big Jule/Regal and Royal/T Brady

Race 10) Purple Wayne/Lazer Light/Azaria
