Condolence to the people of Surfside, Florida
Dear Editor,
Extreme grief is being felt for the Florida, US, residents in Surfside who have lost loved ones, been injured, or are now bereft of their belongings.
The surveillance footage captured of the building’s collapse is both frightening and disturbing.
The providential act of rescue, fishing out of the whale of the rubble a youngster, Jonah Handler, is a bright light in the darkness. His cry for help was heard by a passer-by walking his dog in the cool of the early morning at the time. Nonetheless, the loss of his mother must be devastating.
While investigations are on the way, and what we can glean at this time is sketchy, issues regarding global warming, sea water, underground water sources, swimming pools all point to the erosion that can take place to any structure over time.
Our hearts go out to these families. To have experienced such a disaster, even as the world struggles with the novel coronavirus pandemic, but shaken their very self.
We, your neighbours in Jamaica, will help in any way we can.
