Lil Kish takes a stand against violence
UP-AND-COMING singer Lil Kish, 11, is adding her voice to oppose violence against women in her latest song.
“I want the message to bring awareness all over the world that violence is wrong and needs to stop,” she told the Jamaica Observer.
The song, Woman Violence, is co-produced by Dappa Don Entertainment, King Kish Records, and Young School Entertainment. It was released in April.
Lil Kish (given name Tajana Gardner) is pleased with its reception. Woman Violence has an accompanying music video.
Since the start of the year, the island has been rocked by several brutal murders of women.
In March, 20-year-old Khanice Jackson was strangled by Robert Fowler, who left her body inside his home in Portmore, St Catherine, before dumping it. The 50-year-old mechanic later confessed to the crime.
Last Sunday, 20-year-old Tashika McKay was murdered during a dispute with her boyfriend in Rhoden Hall, Clarendon. The pregnant woman’s throat was slashed, and the suspect, Markland Hayles, committed suicide at the Lionel Town Police Station a day later.
Lil Kish, a grade-six student at Ardenne Preparatory in Kingston, launched her career last December with Corona. Since then, she has also released Living The Life and Times Like These.
The Mandeville-based artiste said she was fortunate to realise her passion for music.
“Because my father owns a sound system, I always listened to different genres of music and that’s how I grew to love music,” Lil Kish said.
Lil Kish said she focuses on topical issues to help bring awareness and create change. Besides furthering her music career, she hopes to become an architect.
