Brooks, Myers late additions to Jamaica’s Carifta Games team
Two athletes — Kevin Brooks of Calabar High and Shania Myers of Hydel High, winners of the decathlon and heptathlon, respectively, at last week’s ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships — have been added to the Jamaican team for this weekend’s 49th staging of the Carifta Games in Kingston.
The addition of the two athletes brought the Jamaican total up to the maximum 80 allowed after the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) had named a 78-member team two weeks ago.
The Jamaican team was selected from the results of the three-day Carifta Trials held at the National Stadium March 11-13.
Brooks, who will compete in the octathlon, was second in the decathlon at Champs, behind St Lucia’s Khailan Vitalis, while Myers dominated the heptathlon to win with 4,876 points.
The Carifta Games will be held for the first time since 2019 and will start on Saturday morning, and the multi-events will be held on the first two of the three-day championships.
Meanwhile, teams for the championships are expected to start arriving in Jamaica today with the majority expected on Friday.
