XLCR obliterate eight-woman Tivoli in high school football
It was another stroll in the park for Excelsior High as the defending champions laid eight-woman Tivoli Gardens High to rest with a 26-0 whipping at the latter’s home field on Thursday in their Zone A contest of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/TIP Friendly Society Girls’ football competition.
National representative and team Captain Davia Richards was the star for Excelsior, tapping in a remarkable 10 goals. Richards, sporting the number 11 jersey, got her goals in the ninth, 12th, 22nd, 25th, 38th, 45th, 62nd, 74th, 77th, and 79th minutes. Richards has tallied 24 goals from four matches so far.
Another national representative, Shaneil Buckley, was also in goal scoring mode as she bagged a six-timer. Buckley scored in the 25th, 44th, 46th, 56th, 57th and 73rd minutes. Akelia Johnson got three goals (sixth, 51st and 54th minutes), while Ricquanna Richards scored a brace in the 27th and 30th minutes. Other goals came from Cassandra Smith (18th minute), Tiny Seaton (21st), Devonae Lewis (56th), Schenell Goodhall (67th), and Shylah Francis (72nd).
Excelsior has been a football-playing institution for many years, winning many titles on their way to becoming the country’s top side in schoolgirl football. The huge win may not come as a surprise as they only played against eight players, but it was another example of Excelsior stamping their dominance under the guidance of Coach Xavier Gilbert.
“The game wasn’t difficult; it was a little bit too easy and so it didn’t challenge us at all and I am pretty pleased with the results. At least the girls scored some goals as some of the younger players got the opportunity and they too have scored some goals,” Gilbert told the Jamaica Observer.
From the first whistle, the writing was on the wall as Excelsior dominated possession. It didn’t take long for Johnson to start the party for Excelsior with a beautiful strike in the sixth minute that gave Tivoli Gardens’ Evangiline Ronkine no chance in goal.
Ronkine and her teammates, who played three short because of limited available players, were helpless as the floodgates opened, leaving Excelsior with a 12-0 lead at the half-time break of the 80-minute contest.
On the resumption, Excelsior seemed to be playing who wants to score the most goals as the girls began to fire from all ranges and angles. They poured in 14 goals in the second half as they breezed to victory.
