Top student Amoy Davis determined to achieve
DETERMINATION is what led to Amoy Davis doing exceptionally well in her Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations last year.
The 18-year-old Wolmer’s Girls’ student gained information technology, religious education, English and history at the grade 1 level, Spanish, literature and social studies at grade 2, and mathematics at grade 3.
“Despite being in a health turmoil for the past year, I have chosen to do everything in my power but give up! I completed my CSEC examinations while not being in the best of shape, health and mentally wise, yet I was still determined to do what I could to achieve,” she told Career & Education.
The results placed her first in Jamaica and fifth among the top-10 students on the Caribbean Examinations Council 2021 merit list for religious education.
Davis, who is now in sixth form at Wolmer’s, admitted that she was shocked when she first saw her exam results.
“I was in a state of disbelief until I saw other people posting, then I realised that it was actually real. It was only pure happiness and gratitude to God from there; this gave me a big push to soar even higher in all I do. When I got my results I felt somewhat proud, yet disappointed with myself because I felt like I could have done so much better if it wasn’t for the pandemic and all the struggles it brought with it,” she said.
“The biggest lesson I’ve learnt during the past year is to never give up. The sky is not the limit because there is no limit to what you can do — you literally can do whatever you put your mind to, no matter your situation. Your constant perseverance and discipline will literally help you to succeed,” she added.
Davis, who is passionate about pursuing law, is now encouraging her peers to do their best in excelling in school.
“Your future is all up to you, so you have to make a choice whether to stay mediocre forever or become unforgettable. My choice is to create a life worth living and leave an impact everywhere I go. What’s yours?”
