Mahogany to crush all comers in Easter Sprint Cup
THE talented Mahogany, from the stables of Ian Parsrad, returns to competitive racing from a seven-month break as the favourite to win the $1.05-million Easter Sprint Cup feature event at Caymanas Park today.
Mahogany has ongoing problems which have limited his race appearances during his career of 15 starts, holding nine wins, two second- and one third-place finish, with lifetime earnings of $6,725,750.
Mahogany has not raced in 212 days, but that should not be an issue as he usually does well coming off a break. There is no doubt that the five-year-old chestnut gelding possesses the requisite class to easily deal with rivals in the Easter Cup — it is just a matter of whether or not he is fit and proper.
He has been looking the part in his early morning gallops. Mahogany, on April 4, cantered out of the mile chute and clocked a decent 1:00.4 for five furlongs (1,000m). One week later he was again noticed when breezing 1:17.2 easy for six furlongs (1,200m).
The three-year-old and upward Non-Restricted Overnight Allowance contest over five and a half furlongs (1,100m) is the final of nine races on the day. Post time for the race is 5:20 pm with first post at 12:35 pm.
The likes of Lure of Lucy, Runaway Algo and Trevor’s Choice should extend the favourite to his limit here.
Lure of Lucy also makes her seasonal return after a break of 142 days of rest. The Jason DaCosta trainee last raced in November of last year when finishing fourth behind Eroy and current Horse of the Year Further and Beyond in a seven-and-a-half-furlong event.
The bay filly is competent at five and a half furlongs and has been sighted at exercise with some encouraging spins. The only issue facing Lure of Lucy is the number one draw, from which she must exit in a flash to have any chance of winning.
Runaway Algo comes into this race on the backend of three consecutive victories. The three-year-old chestnut colt is the youngest of the 14 horses nominated in this event and is on a path of rapid progression which will hold him in good stead racing in Overnight for the first occasion.
Victory here for Runaway Algo will underline his ability and lead him to the higher grades, but this foreigner will have his work cut out for him as he faces well-seasoned and quality opponents.
Trevor’s Choice has not raced since July 24 of 2021. This six-year-old is known to be hampered by injuries, as evidenced by him being declared a late non-starter (lame) on January 1, 2022. Trevor’s Choice is as fast as they come and can go in front in the blink of an eye. If the right Trevor’s Choice takes to the track on Easter Monday, racing fans are in for a treat.
