Antigua break Barbados resistance with late strike
MIAMI, Florida (CMC) — Second-half substitute Shavorn Philip struck in the second minute of stoppage time to break the heart of Barbados as Antigua and Barbuda snatched a dramatic 1-0 win in the Concacaf Nations League here Thursday night.
Both teams scuppered opportunities to score either half of the League B, Group A fixture; and with time ticking away at Darren Sammy National Stadium in St Lucia, a stalemate appeared the fair outcome.
However, an intricate give-and-go between Ashley George and Javorn Stevens resulted in George being released down the right side of the box and squaring a pass into the 18-yard area.
The ball fell to Philip who nudged his finish past goalkeeper Kishmar Primus while losing his balance, sparking celebrations on the Antigua bench.
Primus had earlier pulled off a crucial save from the feet of Junior Benjamin just before half-time, and came to his side’s rescue again in the 89th to deny England-based TJ Bramble.
At Stade Georges-Chaumet in Cayenne in Group D, hosts French Guiana stunned Guatemala 2-0 thanks to goals from Joel Sarrucco in the eighth minute and Thomas Nemouthe four minutes before the break.
Belize, meanwhile, suffered a home defeat in Belmopan when they went down 2-0 to the Dominican Republic at FFB Stadium, also in Group D.
Jean Carlos López put the visitors ahead in the 20th minute before Dorny Romero doubled the advantage in the 67th minute.
Guadeloupe withstood a second-half challenge from Cuba to come away with a 2-1 win at home at Stade René Serge Nabajoth.
Gregory Gendrey struck in the 15th minute before Maykel Reyes equalised for the visitors in the 74th minute, but Thierry Ambrose provided the winner in the 90th.
In League C, Anguilla played to a nil-all draw with Dominica at the Valley, while in League A Panama brushed aside Costa Rica 2-0.
