High expectations as Jamaicans hunt glory at NCAA outdoor champs
There are high expectations on today’s final day of the NCAA Division One outdoor track and field championships at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon, with a number of Jamaican women poised to win titles.
Six Jamaican women have qualified in four individual track finals and will be joined by four others in three field event finals today.
The format of the four-day championships sees the men competing on Wednesday and Friday and the women on Thursday and Saturday.
All athletes in the top eight in their events will get first team All-American designations, while those who drop out at the semi-finals will be named second team All-Americans.
Wayne Pinnock of the University of Tennessee won the men’s long jump on Wednesday with his teammate Carey McLeod fourth, while Asani Hylton of Stephen F Austin University was sixth in the decathlon with a personal best 7748 points.
On Thursday, Kevona Davis of the University of Texas advanced in the 100m and 200m and Kemba Nelson of the University of Oregon will join her in the 100m.
Three Jamaicans — Stacey Ann Williams of the University of Texas, college leader Charokee Young of Texas A&M University (TAMU) and Kavia Francis of Baylor University — will line up in the 400m, while Demisha Roswell of Texas Tech qualified for the 100m hurdles final.
Meanwhile, favourite Lamara Distin of TAMU will hope to go one place higher than her runner-up spot from last year in the high jump today. Gabrielle Bailey of Kent State will contest the discus throw while freshman phenom Ackelia Smith of the University of Texas and Danielle Spence of Texas-San Antonio will contest the triple jump.
