One Caribbean… Global Impact Part 2

Honouring Outstanding Leaders of Caribbean & Canadian Heritage

Luminary Award

Presented to people of Caribbean heritage who have made outstanding contributions on an international scale in their respective fields, or people who have brought to prominence issues which affect the Caribbean (West Indian) region

“To be given the Luminary Award is really humbling… My mission is to provide as much light as possible. We all start out by reflecting light. I implore the UWI students to reflect as much light as you can in this life and reflect it until you can produce your own light.”— Basil Watson Garfield Robinson
Six-time Olympic medallist and philanthropist Andre De Grasse was honoured by The UWI with the Luminary Award. The award was accepted by De Grasse’s sister Alexandra Waithe (fourth left) from co-patron Brigette Chang (fourth right). Sharing in the moment were Chang’s children Lucas and Savanna; Professor Sir Hilary Beckles and Scotiabank exec Anya Schnoor as well as co-patrons Andrew Chang and Donette Chin-Loy Chang Garfield Robinson
Six times Olympic medallist and philanthropist Andre De Grasse was honoured by The UWI with the Luminary Award. .

G Raymond Chang Award

Presented to individuals who exemplify the leadership and ideals for which Dr G Raymond Chang OC, OJ stood. Dr Chang was recognised as an outstanding business leader and philanthropist who embodied humility and commitment to the betterment of communities in Canada and beyond.

The G Raymond Chang Award was presented to Dr Janice Fukakusa (fourth left) chancellor, Toronto Metropolitan University & corporate director, by his daughter Brigette Chang (fourth right), her children Lucas (second right) and Savanna (third right), brother Andrew (left) and Chang’s widow, Donette Chin-Loy Chang (right). Acknowledging the late G Raymond Chang and the work of the University of the West Indies, an emotional Dr Janice Fukakusa accepts her award.

Chancellor’s Award

Presented to Caribbean organisations/institutions that have achieved outstanding success or Canadian organisations/institutions that have contributed significantly to the Caribbean or brought to prominence issues which affect the region

Vice-Chancellor’s Award

Presented to individuals of Caribbean-Canadian heritage who have attained success in their field of endeavours

Cheryl Gonsalves accepted the 2022 Vice-Chancellor’s Award on behalf of Dr Shakuntala Haraksingh Thilsted, global lead for nutrition and public health at WorldFish from Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, vice-chancellor of The University of the West Indies Garfield Robinson

Dr Camille Wardrop Alleyne, recipient of the Vice-Chancellor’s Award is a rocket engineer, internationally acclaimed speaker, writer, educational leader and science ambassador. She currently serves as the Deputy Manager for Commercial LEO (low earth orbit) Development Program at NASA Johnson Space Center .

Appreciation on behalf of the many students came from Tajay Henry whose heartfelt story resonated throughout the capacity-filled ballroom ” As I reflect on the last three years, words are not enough to express my gratitude for all you have done for me through my UWI Toronto Benefit Awards Scholarship. Your support has shifted the trajectory of my life. You have helped me realise that I am enough, that I am capable, and that I can achieve and bring my dreams to reality. I am forever grateful to you, the donors and UWI Toronto Gala for the unconditional support over the years to ensure that a young stranger becomes more than a statistic.

I am a couple of months away from graduating , and I am ecstatic that you have chosen to join my journey and to help fulfil a major accomplishment in my life. Thank You!”
