Nelson happy with silver, looks to future with hope
EUGENE, Oregon – With a second major senior championship to come next week, Kemba Nelson, who won a silver medal at the just concluded World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, as part of the women’s 4x100m relay team, is eagerly looking forward to next season.
The former Mt Alvernia High runner, who just graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in applied economics, was a semi-finalist in the women’s 100m and also led off the women’s relay team that ran 41.18 seconds for the silver behind the USA.
She was at a loss for words to describe her feelings after the relays but told the Jamaica Observer West, “Great, amazing, blessed, there are not enough words to describe how I feel,” referring to her first major senior medal.
“I am always grateful to represent Jamaica,” she stressed, adding that she was relieved to find out she was included in the team for the final after running in the semis.
Nelson, who won the PAC-12 women’s sprint double and was part of the winning 4×100 team then, was second in the NCAA Division One 100m, ran a personal best 10.88 seconds to place second in the women’s 100m at the Jamaican Championships, behind Shericka Jackson.
On the relay, which was run on Saturday’s penultimate day of the 10-day championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Nelson said, “I felt great, I always try to catch the person in front of me and I did fairly well in that job…”
Nelson, who was named in the team to compete at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, starting August 2, said she was “hoping for more in the 100m after I failed to get past the semi-finals, the 100m [results] was not what I wanted but my comeback season will be way better.”
The former County of Cornwall Athletics Association (COCAA) medallist signed a professional contract with German Sportswear giants Puma earlier this month, also she announced that she will join the Elite Performance Track Club, headed by former St Elizabeth Technical Head Coach Reynaldo Wellington and based in Kingston.
