More setbacks – Jamaican athlete tests positive for COVID at Commonwealth Games
BIRMINGHAM, England – At least one member of Jamaica’s track and field team at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England has reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 and is currently in isolation.
The athlete tested positive upon arrival in Birmingham and is in a race to be cleared in time for the start of the athletics competition at Alexander Stadium on August 2.
Jamaica’s track and field officials have been hit with several setbacks leading up to the competition including selection issues resulting from late withdrawals of a number of athletes.
The latest athlete to have reportedly pulled out of the Games is world 200m gold medal winner Shericka Jackson.
However, up to Friday evening in Birmingham, team manager Ludlow Watts told the Jamaica Observer that he had not received any official information from Jackson’s MVP Track Club camp suggesting that she would pull out.
“I have had no information from MVP personnel regarding any new development. All persons are aware of who were entered in the various events and there has been no discussion on the subject,” said Watts at 5:13 pm on Friday.
Jackson won a silver medal in the 200m at the last Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.
Efforts to receive subsequent updates from officials in Birmingham have not been successful.
Jackson has been confirmed for the 200m by organisers of the Silesia Kamila Skolimowska Memorial in Poland, the next stop on the Diamond League circuit, which is set for August 6, which clashes with the 200m schedule in Birmingham.
