Mahogany to romp clear in feature race

Mahogany to romp clear in feature race

The decorated Mahogany, from the barn of in-form trainer Ian Parsard, hunts his third-consecutive win in the 18th staging of the $1.7-m Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission (BG&LC) Trophy feature event on the eight-race Emancipation Day programme at Caymanas Park today.

Bred by Sensational Slam out of the Traditional mare Mete-Orite, Mahogany had confirmed his status as the top-rated horse in training at present after his impressive win in the inaugural staging of the Clovis Metcalfe Cup over seven and a half furlongs (1,500m) on July 2.

Mahogany led from start to finish in a dominating 10-½ length victory in a time of 1:30.2, beating last year’s Jamaica St Leger and Derby winner Calculus as well as current Horse of the Year Further and Beyond. The talented Mahogany should enjoy this trip and given his speed, this race could be a walk in the park for him despite allowing weight to his six rivals. Panamanian Dick Cardenas will ride the chestnut gelding for the first time.

The three-year-old and upwards Open Allowance contest over 5 ½ furlongs (1,100m) is positioned as the seven race on the card with a post time of 4:45 pm. First race is at 1:00 pm.

Lure of Lucy, trained by Jason DaCosta, and God of Love, conditioned by Fitzgerald Richard, should be fighting for the exacta spot behind Mahogany here. Mahogany’s stablemate She’s A Wonder and Big Jule along with Curlin’s Affair, trained by Anthony Nunes and the Richard Azan-trained Laban look well held in this sprint race.

Lure of Lucy finished second behind Jordon Reign’s in the Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame Stakes Trophy at the Open Allowance/Graded Stakes over six furlongs (1,200m) on July 16. Lure of Lucy has speed and will more than likely try to lead, but that is a daunting task with Mahogany around.

God of Love is a consistent runner who has been off the board once this season from eight outings. God of Love, given his capability, he could be the closet to Mahogany at the wire.

She’s A Wonder produced a strong performance to beat rivals in an Overnight Allowance going seven and a half furlongs (1,500m) at the races on Saturday. There is the probability she does not face the starter here, but we have to wait and see what happens. Start or not, She’s A Wonder has no chance against her illustrious stablemate Mahogany.

Big Jule is not a sprinter and the distance of five and a half furlongs will be much to his dislike. He will be left behind. After his win at the Overnight Allowance level on July 23, Curlin’s Affair steps up here to compete and has little chance of upsetting the applecart. Laban is in a similar boat.

Ones to watch:

Race 1) Last Bid/GT Boy/Joe

Race 2) Mine That Cat/Unruly Boss/Katalina

Race 3) Thalos/Power Ranking/Emperorofthecats

Race 4) Volatility/Thalita/Legit Boss

Race 5) Awesome Boy/Buzz Assault/Ultimatum
