Mixed morning for Jamaica at World Under-20
CALI, Colombia— Jamaican athletes had mixed results on Monday’s first session at the World Under-20 Athletics Championships at the Pascual Guerrero Olympic Stadium in Cali, Colombia.
Both 100 metre men Sandrey Davison and Bouwahjgie Nkrumie won their first round heats to book their places in Tuesday’s semi-finals, but shot putter Britannie Johnson and 800m runner Rushana Dwyer both failed to make progress.
Davison, the two time national junior champion, ran 10.25 seconds (1.7m/s) to win his heat easily while Nkrumie ran 10.39 seconds (-2.9m/s) as defending champion and World Junior record holder, Letsile Tebogo, set a Championships record 10.00 seconds (-0.6m/s) to lead all qualifiers.
Johnson came up agonisingly short of advancing in the shot put, finishing 13th overall after throwing 14.44m in the final round and just missed advancing by 19 centimetres.
Dwyer ran 2:14.23 seconds for seventh in her heat and failed to advance.
Six more Jamaicans in individual events and the Mixed 4x400m relay team will seek to advance in the afternoon session.
Dishaun Lamb and Demario Prince will contest the 110m hurdles first round, Cedricka Williams, who was a finalist in Nairobi last year, and Abigail Martin will contest the women’s discus throw while Kobe Lawrence and Christopher Young will start their competition in the men’s shot put.
