Happy to be a Jamaican!
Dear Editor,
I have been attending the Grand Gala Independence celebrations, which is held each year at the National Stadium, since 1983. And, from all indications, I must confess that it was one of the best Grand Galas I have ever witnessed.
The event was attended by thousands of Jamaicans, and from what I can recall, I have never seen so many people since the 1998 World Cup qualifying finals of the Reggae Boyz.
I was quite impressed by the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) display of teamwork when they were trying to assemble the house. I had never seen a house being assembled in such a short space of time. I was also fascinated by how quickly they constructed the bridge and disassembled the jeep so that they could transport the parts to the other side of the bridge.
However, I was so awestruck by the fact of the helicopter flying right over my head to enter the national stadium to pick up the injured person — a part of the JDF’s demonstration — I almost fainted. In fact, I could not fathom that a helicopter could enter the National Stadium at such a low height and be at a standstill for a few minutes. I thought that was really brilliant.
We all enjoyed the paratroopers who also jumped from 8,000 feet above into the National Stadium and their use of technology to hover above and wave to us below.
Speaking of technology, what a sight it was when the lights dimmed and we were all witness to the drone show — something which had never been done before. Images of Miss Lou, the Jamaican flag, our famous humming bird, the indomitable Usain Bolt, as well other distinctly Jamaican features and figures were projected against the backdrop of the surrounding Beverley Hills. I think it was quite fitting for the 60th anniversary of our Independence.
I was also quite happy to know that Derrick Morgan and Sanchez received citations. Commendations should also be give to Toni-Ann Singh for her beautiful rendition of the national anthem, and I am happy it was broadcast live.
I must commend the Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia “Babsy” Grange for organising such a wonderful Grand Gala.
I am happy that I went and I am happy to be a Jamaican.
