JUST in time for the start of the new school year, and to celebrate National Hero Marcus Garvey’s birthday, the Jamaica Association for the Deaf (JAD), through its social enterprise JAD Binders, is providing the inspirational Garvey Gems journal at a special discount to educators and the first 50 buyers who are not part of the education sector.

“We’re excited to be able to offer this special opportunity — especially to teachers, students and writers of all ages,” said Deniese Badroe, JAD’s director of business development. “But we hope everyone will use Garvey Gems as part of their daily routine to jot down their thoughts, lists, observations, and for encouragement and self-reflection.”

Badroe said the unique journal consists of numerous quotes such as “There is a world of opportunities awaiting us, and it is for us — through unity of will and purpose — to say we will play our part…” which were taken from the book, The Philosophy and Opinions of Marcus Garvey, compiled by Amy Jacques Garvey.

JAD Binders, a social enterprise under the auspices of the Jamaica Association for the Deaf (a charity), created the journal and has several other useful items for sale. The proceeds will help to provide education and employment opportunities within the deaf community.

“Students can use Garvey Gems to track their progress and growth as the new school year begins. And, it will enable teachers to remember important activities,” Badroe.

Copies of Garvey Gems are available at JAD Binders (located at the Danny Williams School for the Deaf in Papine) and at Things Jamaican stores.

Garvey, Jamaica’s first national hero, was born 135 years ago on August 17.
