Eagle One poised to take flight in Arthur Jones Mem Cup
EAGLE One, after one win from eight starts at the top grade, takes a drop in class and should easily put away rivals in the $1.1-million Arthur Jones Memorial Cup feature race going six furlongs (1,200m) at Caymanas Park today.
The five-year-old American-bred bay gelding has been thereabouts in his races without landing telling blows when he needed to but he faces his easiest task for a spell — and by all indications the Jason DaCosta trainee is set for victory here.
Eagle One, based on his running style, can either come from off the pace or set the fractions but, whatever he chooses, he is going to be hard to beat.
In the last race on July 16 over six furlongs Eagle One was fourth by 4½ lengths, beaten to the punch by the much-improved and talented foreigner Jordon Reign’s. Eagle One sat in second position, relaxed on the headline, but had to check heading into the half-mile (800m) turn — and he never recovered well enough to be a factor.
But he has been kept on the move at exercise, and in this weak field the Carlton Watson-owned Eagle One should notch his eighth career win from 49 starts. The last time Eagle One was at the Overnight Allowance level he was a winner, defeating El Profesor by a neck at six and a half furlongs (1,300m). Champion jockey Anthony Thomas replaces the young Jordan Barrett in the saddle and is pitted at top weight of 57.0kgs (126 lb).
The three-year-olds and upwards Non-Restricted Overnight Allowance call will run at the 10th and final event on the day, with a post time of 5:25 pm. First race is at high noon.
The likes of Race Car, Emperorofthecats, El Profesor, Awesome Treasure, and Generational should be in a tight battle for second money.
Race Car also steps down here to compete. The American-bred grey/roan horse won the second time of asking since returning from injury on March 13. Race Car disappointed in his next three runs but an improved effort on the cards is expected here. Despite the number-one draw, the presence of Shane Ellis in the saddle, reuniting with trainer Spencer Chung, is an indication that Race Car is coming with a good effort.
Bred, owned and trained by Carl Anderson, Emperorofthecats has done himself proud to reach this level after a struggling Classic campaign. The three-year-old bay gelding is developing rapidly with sprinting his forte, making six furlongs a perfect journey for him. Emperorofthecats races outside of the three-year-old grouping and may need time to settle in Overnight, but his class should see him through.
El Profesor, trained by Patrick Lynch, has been very disappointing in his recent races. After finishing second behind Curlin’s Affair, two starts before over five furlongs round, El Profesor is poised for another showing of worth in this one.
Awesome Treasure has showed little in her last two starts but the Gary Subtarie trainee is slowly finding herself and has enough quality to challenge strongly here.
The Rown Mathie-conditioned Generational has been holding his own at this level, as evidenced by his third-place finish behind Curlin’s Affair on July 23. Generational has speed and, if used judiciously, the five-year-old chestnut gelding will have a telling impact on the outcome.
Meanwhile, champion two-year-old from last season Golden Wattle gets the perfect opportunity to win her first race for the year in a three-year-old and upwards (non-winners of four) event for local horses and a three- and four-year-old (non-winners of three) for imported horses. The seven will race over 7½ furlongs (1,500m).
Golden Wattle is without a win this year from five starts. She finished fourth in the recent Jamaica Oaks over 10 furlongs after leading for most of the way. She should find these more manageable and, given her back class, Golden Wattle, a genuine non-winner of four, is presented with the best opportunity for a three-year-old victory. Plus, Golden Wattle has received a drop in the handicaps from 126 lb to 115 lb. Tevin Foster remains in the saddle.
Perfect Brew, from the stables of hall of fame trainer Richard Azan, looks the only one that could upstage Golden Wattle here, but that is a going to be a difficult task for him.
Perfect Brew finally came good on August 6 when winning the Independence Day Stakes over seven furlongs, significantly benefiting from the services of jockey Anthony Thomas. Perfect Brew, while improving in the non-winners of three category, has to put each hoof right every time to accomplish victory, even with the uptick in form.
