HOWILOOKIN FINDS THE WINNERS’ ENCLOSURE
Three-year-old bay colt Howilookin, after 13 starts with a couple of near misses, finally got his head in front at the wire in a native-bred three-year-old maiden maiden condition call over one mile (1,600m).
Trained by Anthony Nunes and ridden by Tevin Foster, Howilookin (Western Classic – Gold Charm) was slowly into stride when the gates opened as Amad Ali (Conrod Ellis) led the field down the backstretch ahead of Noa Li (Odeen Edwards), Anchorman (Oshane Nugent) and Secret Emperor (Shane Ellis).
Still, off the lead passing the five-furlong (1,000m) pole, Howilookin came into view navigating the half-mile (800m) turn when slipping down into fourth place behind Secret Emperor, Noa Li, and Anchorman.
Howilookin turned for home close to the leaders and, after searching for racing room, he was switched to the inside rails and came with a strong run to beat Secret Emperor by a head at the wire in a time of 1:44.3. Anchorman finished in third place.
TRAINER KEFFIN MURRAY OFF THE MARK IN 2022
Trainer Keffin Murray saddled his first winner for the season after his charge JB Flyer won a native-bred four-year-old and upwards maiden event going 4½ furlongs (900m).
With Phillip Parchment in the saddle, JB Flyer showed good speed when the race started, racing close to the leaders Hopenperserverance (Mario Chong), Dotlin (Javaniel Patterson), Wearyourhonor (Chris Mamdeen), and Bubbly Girl (Roger Hewitt).
As the runners sorted themselves out, Dotlin took control approaching the dummy rails with Wearyourhonor and JB Flyer in hot pursuit. Entering the final furlong, JB Flyer came through for the lead and went on to win comfortably by a length and a quarter.
Tiger Bella (Samantha Fletcher) came from behind runners to get second place ahead of Lucky Plumma (Shavon Townsend). The final time was 57.2.
BACK-TO-BACK WINS FOR JAMALJAMES
JamalJames completed his second-consecutive win when easily brushing aside rivals in an Optional Claiming ($250,000-$200,000) spread travelling 6 furlongs (1,200m).
San Siro (Calvin Bailey) dashed to the front after the first furlong (200m), ahead of Acapella (Aaron Chatrie) and the railing-running JamalJames, trained by Gregory Forsyth and ridden by Tevin Foster.
JamalJames emerged from the pack, went in chase of San Siro at the half-mile, and soon took over the lead at the top of the home stretch. JamalJames then pushed away from rivals to win by 5¾ lengths ahead of Shashamani Dance (Roger Hewitt) and Acapella in a time of 1:18.4.
GREAT TRICK GOES ONE BETTER
Great Trick, after an encouraging second-place finish on last behind Gracefully Made, returned and went one better in a native-bred three-year-old maiden contest at 4 furlongs (800m).
It wasn’t the best of starts for the Gary Subtraie-trained Great Trick as jockey Dane Dawkins held the bay colt behind early pacesetters Northern Lady (Daniel Satchel) and Jungle Boogie (Tevin Foster). Great Trick continued to race behind the leaders until inside the furlong and half (300m) when he burst through horses to challenge for the lead.
Great Trick gained the upper hand in the final stages of the race and went on to register a 2¼-length win ahead of Northern Lady and Lady Ben (Andre Powell). The winning time was recorded at 47.4 seconds.
TWO HORSES CLAIMED
In the third race, Donovan Plummer claimed Whatever for owner Winston Lewis for $250,000 from Adin Williams.
In the fifth race, Tyrone Prince claimed Special Counsel for owner Anthony Chin for $750,000 from Phillip Lee.
