Five health and safety tips for back-to-school
It’s almost that time again when, as the saying goes, ‘free paypa bun up’.
It’s September, which means the summer has officially ended and it’s back-to-school time. This means it’s time for the customary ‘wash-out’, dental check and medical examinations as parents ensure their children are in tip-top shape and ready to take on the new school year.
As we continue to battle the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and closely monitor the monkeypox outbreak, maintaining one’s health may seem a bit overwhelming.
OBSERVER ONLINE has put together a few tips to help parents/guardians maintain the health and safety of their children in high priority as they return to face-to-face learning.
1. Ensure that your child is fully immunised
Making sure that your children are fully vaccinated against viruses and diseases is of the utmost importance, especially with the emergence of COVID-19 and monkeypox. Getting your children fully immunised may ensure their long-term health. If you aren’t sure whether your child has received all their relevant shots, now is the time to check those Health Passports.
2. Ensure that a complete medical examination is done
Before the new school year commences, make sure your child has completed a full medical examination. This is key to determining your child’s health status and could be the earliest detection of any ‘nasty’ viruses that may be lingering asymptomatically.
3. Stick to food safety practices/guidelines
We are living in an era of heightened sanitisation, so it is important that parents adhere to the proper protocols when preparing meals for their children. Kids love to share snacks with fellow classmates, so one needs to ensure all is well in meal prep.
Remember to:
• Wash hands with warm soap and water for at least 20 seconds before preparing food.
• Prepare food on a clean surface to prevent food-borne illnesses.
• Check canned food labels to determine whether they are safe for your children to eat. Pay special attention to expiry dates.
4. Assist in preventing harmful diseases
Children live what they learn so remember to teach your offspring to wash their hands regularly, especially after using the bathroom or handling food. Washing must persist for at least 30 seconds to prevent the spread of germs and other parasites.
COVID-19 is still around so ensure your children understand that they should continue wearing masks, especially among large groups of people.
5. Ensure your child/children maintain a balanced diet
Eating the right foods can help in staving off viruses so ensure your children have foods from all the food groups. Avoid sugary drinks and candy and make sure children are given lots of water. It is important to stay hydrated.
A balanced diet will also help your children function and focus more effectively in the classroom.
