Calculus set to romp in Mark My Word feature
THE Gary Subratie-conditioned Calculus seems poised to continue his rich vein of form and complete a hat-trick of wins in the $1.29-million Mark My Word Trophy, the main attraction of the four-trophy event on today’s 10-race card at Caymanas Park.
Calculus, last year’s winner of the Jamaica St Leger and Derby Classic races, won back-to-back races in September and should again stamp his class in the nine-furlong, 25-yard (1,820m) contest to make it five wins from 10 starts this season.
Calculus proved that he is the country’s top stayer after winning the Menudo Trophy over 10 furlongs (2,000m) on September 24. Then Calculus defeated I Am Fred by a length and three-quarters in a time of 2:08.0.
He was also an easy winner over today’s distance on September 11 when putting away Marquesas and Storm by 2¼ lengths in a smooth time of 1:55.2.
Regular rider Shane Ellis, who won all four races aboard Calculus so far this season, will once again pilot the four-year-old bay colt at a top weight of 57.0kgs (126 lb).
Though this will be his first time at two turns, Dale Murphy’s Runaway Algo looks like the only threat to Calculus in the six-horse field.
The event, which is confined to three-year-old and upwards Open Allowance company to honour the Richard Azan-trained super horse Mark My Word — 2010 Triple Crown winner, 2010 Horse of the Year, and winner of three consecutive Superstakes races — is positioned as the eighth event on the 10-race card with a post time of 3:40 pm. First race is at 11:30 am.
Runaway Algo, a three-year-old American-bred chestnut horse, has so far won five races from nine starts on local soil, making him one of the most improved and talented runners in training at present.
On September 25 Runaway Algo easily defeated rivals by 2 3/4 lengths over seven and a half furlongs (1,500m) at the Overnight Allowance level. He won in an impressive time of 1:30.4, confirming his growing status.
The rest of the field is made up of Big Jule and She A Wonder, from the barn of Ian Parsard; Money Monster, bred, owned and trained by Fitzroy Glispie; and Jason DaCosta’s Make Up Artist.
The other trophy races are the $1.14-million three-year-old and upwards Overnight Allowance call for the Vassell “Jolly Man” Najair Memorial Cup over five and half furlongs (1,100m); the $1.09-million Royal Dad, a Restricted Stakes race for native-bred three-year-olds and four-year-old/imported three-year-olds and upward (non-winners of three) over nine furlongs and 25 yards; and the $1.06-million Princess Popstar. The Princess Popstar is a native-bred and imported two-year-old Restricted Allowance II contest going five and a half furlongs.
