High-flying Mona hunt eighth-straight win against Wolmer’s
Mona High will be aiming for their eighth-straight victory in this season’s ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup when they host Wolmer’s Boys’ in a top-of-the-table clash in today’s feature match in Zone E at the Mona field.
Match time is 3:00 pm.
Mona, who are one of the favourites to win this year’s competition, lead Zone E with 21 points, six ahead of Wolmer’s. They are followed by Hydel (13), Camperdown (eight), Kingston High (three) and Papine (one).
The Craig Butler-coached Mona, who have scored a league-high 43 goals while conceding eight, is coming off an exciting 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Camperdown in their last encounter.
They defeated Wolmer’s 3-1 in their first meeting this season, and Butler said his players are very confident and raring to go.
“I am feeling quite comfortable and relaxed going into this match and the boys are confident,” said Butler.
“We are focused on developing our players to a level that would ensure that they go professional and therefore we are preparing for the game against Wolmer’s with some enthusiasm,” he said. “We want to ensure that we get through the rounds and finish on top,” Butler said.
Mona will be relying heavily on striker Donhue Mitchell, who lead the team with 13 goals this season.
He is expected to receive support from Zhaine Pinnock, Kshaine Gordon and Robino Gordon.
Wolmer’s, who are aiming to turn the tables on their opponents, should be feeling confident entering today’s game after their 5-1 victory over Papine in their last match.
The Jerome Waite-coached team’s current record stands at five wins and two defeats from their seven matches. In the process, the Heroes’ Circle-based institution has scored 13 goals, while conceding five so far this season.
They will rest their hopes in the hands of Jahmani Bell, Dante Dacres, Nathaniel Brooks and Jayden Walters to lead them to victory.
“Mona have won all seven games that they have played so far and we are looking forward to another tough game,” said Waite. “However, I believe that we need the points more than Mona at this time, and so we would have to go out there and work continuously to get these three points,” he added.
