WATCH: #UpNext: D’Uptimis has no regrets after sacrificing college to pursue music career
Sacrificing tertiary studies to focus full time on music is still one of the best decisions D’Uptimis made. The up-and-coming artiste disclosed to OBSERVER ONLINE that his career has been on a steady upward trajectory since entering the music industry.
“I started doing music from my eye deh at my knee. It was just a natural love still. Sometimes when me think back on it, it kind of hard to really describe it. But it was just something that I took to in a very natural way,” he said.
D’Uptimis, given name Torian Beckford, had help being immersed in music as his parents were also involved with the art in some way.
“My father was a selector and my mother did always love singing, so me feel like their talents get passed down to me. Like so many others, I have a background in music because at one point – while growing up- I was singing on the choir at church and I found myself liking music without even being influenced by anyone. It just came to me naturally, like it was a gift,” D’Uptimis added.
He told OBSERVER ONLINE that he took his talents to the studio as an eighth grader at Calabar High School and released his first single titled ‘Bad Gyal’, which he described as a “sexual girl song”.
D’Uptimis then embarked on his career path in 2015 when he left high school with the intention to take music seriously.
“After I left school in 2015, that is when I decided to take music seriously. I could have gone to college but I put that aside to pursue a music career. It has been a long journey but it has been steady growth. Over time, I have seen where things have changed because I have started to get more shows now, and on my VEVO channel I have seen growth in my views. My subscription and followers on social media have also been increasing,” D’Uptimis said.
The growth he has been experiencing has also expanded to collaborations as the artiste has a song with dancehall artiste Iwaata titled ‘Chaka Chaka’ which was released some four months ago.
This was one of his proudest accomplishments as the single has racked up over 100,000 views since its release.
He added that with this song and another called ‘Born Fi Diss’ people have been very receptive to his music as the latter is one the highest viewed videos on his YouTube page.
So far the formula of writing music based on his life experiences has been appealing to his fans as seen from their comments on the different streaming and social media platforms.
“Life inspires my music; most of what I write is about my life. But writing varies for me because I can be here and just see something or somebody says something and it connects with me and me say ‘you know that would a bad fi write bout’. And then me might see something happen or something happen to me personally and me decide fi write about it and just put it to music,” the artiste disclosed.
With all the hard work he has already put into music and with plans to do even more, D’Uptimis is aiming to one day reach the “highest heights” in music.
“When you do something you love, you supposed to want reach the pinnacle, so naturally me want the same thing. Me not even a go say aim for the sky; I say aim for space so if you drop, you know say you will land on the clouds,” the 26-year-old said.
“Highest heights for me in music is to collect awards like all some Grammys and top some billboard charts. That is what I aspire to do,” he added.
In order to achieve these goals, D’Uptimis plans to keep releasing music that is liked by his fans, with the hope to reach even more people in Jamaica and internationally.
His music can be found on YouTube and all major streaming platforms.
